What could be causing rattling under the hood when sitting still?

When sitting still or stopping at a red light there is a slight rattling/tapping sound under the hood. I am thinking maybe one of the plastic pieces under the hood may be loose? It only seems to happen when holding the brake to stop the car from moving. I don't think it's related to the brakes themselves as I just had both the brakes and rotors changed. Other than that the car runs/drives fine and has regular oil changes and maintenance. Any suggestions, thoughts, or ideas on what I may want to check would be appreciated.

Many things can cause your problem but the most common is either a heat shield or a retaining clip that has come loose. My recommendation is to block your wheels so that your vehicle can't roll forward, open your hood, start your vehicle, HOLD YOUR FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, have an assistant listen to see if they can locate the noise. If the noise is gone with the hood open then look for any shiny spots on the underside of the hood.

Maybe hydraulic lifters

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2014

Hey Frank, are there any things I should be looking for that would help me decide if it's the hydraulic lifters as you've suggested?

SOURCE: rattling noise coming from front & back

Matt, sounds like a suspension or exhaust noise. Grab onto exhaust (engine cold) at several locations (car supported securely so u don't get crushed) and wiggle, tug pull, kick, etc to see if u can get it to make any noise from hitting anything. Look for evidence of the exhaust rubbing against something, by looking for shiny metal due to contact w/ something. Also push up and down on the body of the car as violently as possible to simulate going over bumps. Pay close attention to heat shields around or on the exhaust system, if they are loose, they will make a racket.
And, as I said, possibly the suspension is making the noise, but not as likely, pushing up and down on the car body as described above might reproduce the noise. If it isn't the exhaust (my 1st choice), give me more clues if u can. good luck countrycurt0

SOURCE: check engine light on; ABS/Parking Brake light on - 02' Protege 5

If you live in the US, you can take your car to an Auto Zone store and they will read off the diagnostic code that is causing the check engine lamp to come on. Once you have that then you can decide your next course of action.

Hope this is of some help.

SOURCE: Engine suddenly revs when stopped & @ idling

sounds like one of the metal arms connected to the engine may be getting stuck some how. have someone get in car and press on gas when car is off while you watch engine to see what is moving, then check those arms to see if there is any possible obstructions or knicks or something on them

1993 Saturn sl2 will make rattling noise coming from under hood while sitting at a light with foot on brake if I put in neutral or park it stops and when I'm driving also what could be wrong with it

Chances are that a heat shield located under your exhaust or the catalytic converter has broke loose and rattles when you are idling in drive. This is common on older cars and is only usually noticed while idling in drive because the engine is working under a slight load and runs a little rougher. A good exhaust shop could probably fix it for very little.

Knocking/tapping sound behind left side of engine

if the knocking is occurring while vehicle is in motion it can be a driveshaft cv joint bad..if it occurs while not moving but in gear, it could be the exhaust rattleing under the car..may also be the front end suspension bushings worn..

Hi i have an engine hum between 30mph to 40mph what could cause this

I too had a similar thing. It ultimately turned out the hood. The hood used to rattle slightly at a particular speed range like yours. adjusted the rubber pads under it and the car was silent after that.

Check engine light- 95 mitsubishi eclipse

OK, the correct interval for the replacement of the timing belt for this model is every 60,000 miles. if the belt hasn't been changed, i would do so asap. it may be to late considering that it has started to rattle.

The timing belt can become damaged before it actually breaks, in return, causing valve timing to shift. this will cause the valves to tap the pistons during the idle.

This will run you about 1100 dollars at the dealership plus, they will also replace any push rods if need.
