Hey, someone came over and used their device on my car and it showed a code: P0500. I looked it up and it says its Vehicle speed sensor? What should I be looking for? I want to fix the problem myself if possible. At the moment I have a check engine light on and traction light on(car swerving light). If i have to look for something please point me in the right direction where it's located, etc. THANKS.
Your vehicle is a 2013 sensor should be under warranty --because if you start removing electrical components you may void warranty --wheel speed sensor is part of your front hub abs assembly jack up and support front wheel [either one because you will be checking both]remove wheel check hub is in good shape if good than check the wire connection that runs behind the rotor for damage or disconnection -you will need a multi meter to test the out put and continuity of sensor --to remove a sensor need to remove brake caliper--caliper bracket-rotor you now can unbolt sensor ----the other speed sensor is mounted into the transmission need to jack up and support vehicle and under vehicle follow sensor lines checking for damage or disconnection -----wheel sped sensor --depending on where bought dealer ,online or ebay 30 to 100 ------ speed sensor runs 100 to 250

They are not the sensors you want. The car uses the abs wheel sensors for vehicle speed. Your problem lies in the abs system , possibly the left front sensor, abs ecu or speedo cluster, Clear the code and see if it stay out otherwise you'll need to go to a trusted technician. .

I had the same problem, then took my car to an expert repair shop who diagnosed the sensors and
found no problem with the car. They notified the DMV who was unaware of the problem, who then told the repair shop (John's Bascom Automotive) that they will adjust their computer system to allow a "two speed idle test". My bill was $95 and I still have to pay for a smog test after driving around for
a couple of days to clear the computer monitors, a fair amount and I gladly paid it.
John advised me that I'd get no satisfaction with Toyota or the DMV. I went to the dealership where I
bought the car and they said that the smog stations don't know what they're doing. They charge
about $100 and work around the P0500 code but it takes them about two hours to do this. I told
them that I should have been notified about the dyno none-compatability by Toyota and that Toyota
should have notified the DMV beforehand. I wonder how many speed sensors are being replaced by
unknowing smog shops around the state. I got Toyota's main customer support phone number and
will call them Monday. I'm going to get my pound of flesh ($95 worth) from the DMV next week also.

Your sensor went off because it overknocked.
Try using a different type of fuel with a higher octane.
Erase the code and use the better gas. if it comes back then we will worry about replacing it.

In ordinary conditions the engine replacement should not result in VSS error. TI could not find any bulletin about ECM (the car main computer) reprogramming after engine swap but the
VSS signal passes through two modules, the ABS and the ECM. If you have replaced the engine you may need to re-flash or re-program the ECM . There are a couple of forums where users complain about the same problem.The job can be done at the dealer place.
Before reprogramming the ECM do the regular troubleshooting for P0500. The problem could have been already there before the engine swap, the VSS or the VSS wiring may also have been damaged in engine replacement operations. Check the VSS mounted on transmission, Ohms are between 500 and 700, check also volt output on bridge. Check VSS wiring to ABS module and ECU and check the two-wire connector to VSS (check volts) . Check ECU connector. Check PNP switch.
