Serpentine belts comes off in damp weather

Happened 3 times over 9 mos. on rainy or very damp day. Replaced belt once and tensioner after first incident. Sequel: All suggestions are appreciated, but had been tried before posting. My mechanic's researched this solution which isn't cheap, but it works. Change to a double sided serpentine belt and change the idler pull to a grooved type. Details will be provided if really needed.

Make sure the plastic shield is not missing below the pulleys which keeps road debris and excess water off belt and pulleys. Also check that the alternator or power steering pump are not slightly out of alignment.

Why does the power steering pump drive belt squeel under load when its cold on 2004 hyundai elantra.

this sounds like the belt is worn and needs replacing.when its damp and cold if the belt is worn it will slip easier under this condition than in warmer weather.also the belt tension may not be proper.if this has a belt adjuster that you can adjust then the tension may need to be tightened.if it has an automatic belt tensioner(one that adjust tension all the time)like a serpintine belt then the tensioner may need to be replaced as the spring that crates the tension do get weak over time.

I am trying to hange the serpentine belt on my 09 lancer rallyart and it keeps slipping off

Locate the two belts on the left side (passenger side) of your Mitsubishi Lancer. The outer belt is a serpentine belt, operating four pulleys and the inner belt is your alternator belt.

  • 2 Follow the serpentine (outer) belt to the three pulleys lined up vertically near the front of the engine compartment. Locate the middle pulley, which is the tension pulley for the belt.
  • 3 Loosen the bolt on the middle pulley with a socket wrench by turning counter-clockwise. Do not remove the bolt, just turn it a couple of times. Loosen the tensioner bolt on the side of the of the pulley, facing the front of the vehicle.
  • 4 Remove the serpentine belt and then loosen the bolt on the alternator. With the alternator loose, move it forward so that the alternator belt loosens up and then remove belt from the pulleys.
  • 5 Install the new alternator belt by placing it over both inside pulleys. Tighten the tension on the alternator belt by moving the alternator back and keeping tension on it by holding it back with a long screwdriver. While the alternator belt is tight, use a socket wrench to tighten up the bolt on the alternator.
  • 6 Place the serpentine belt back on the pulleys and then use a socket wrench on the bolt on the front of the tension pulley. Once the serpentine belt is tight, tighten up the bolt in the middle of the tension pulley.
  • 7 Start the Mitsubishi Lancer's engine to test the alternator belt and make sure it is working properly. Once you have verified it is working, turn the engine off.

My belt keeps coming off when the weather is wet. I have replaced the belt twice and the splashguard once. I really do not know what else to do. My husband is disabled and thankfully he hasn't been with me...

Sounds like a bad tensioner. Some cars have automatic tensioners and some are manual. If yours is manual, you just need to pull it tighter with a torque wrench. If it is an automatic tensioner, it will have to be replaced. Pretty easy, just unbolt the old one and bolt the new one on.

    1999 serpatine belt

Hi,the serpentine belt is tensioned automatically by means of a spring loaded tensioner, this is released by using a long 1/2 inch extension bar which fits into a square hole, once pulled back the tensioner can then be held by a nail etc, which is inserted into a hole which aligns with another hole, thus holding the tensioner back in a pre-loaded position to allow you to replace the belt, once replaced you can then pull back the extension bar to remove the nail again and then slowly let off the tension, IF replacing the tensioner, The new one comes pre-loaded with a pin in location to hold it ,hope this is of some help, Bill.
