1994 Mercury Villager suddenly smelled terrible, started squeaking horribly, and then the power steering went. Steering is still possible and easier when the car ran (I parked it ASAP). In the lot I had to do an Incredible Hulk to make the wheels move, but they did move. Was told it's likely the power steering belt. Is there a way for a layman to tell it's not the pump - just the belt?
The power steering belt was part of the problem. As soon as the car was up on the hoist it was pretty clear (it was hanging there). Turns out the pump did kill the belt! Hi Lisa, I'm not certain, but it is possible that the power steering has a separate belt. If the fluid level has remained constant and there are no noticeable leakages, a broken belt is the most likely cause. Regards John
The shifter is not fully in park or neutral beacuse it's loose. Check for a small screw on the floor on the driver side.
If not adjusted properly, the stater won't engage.

try this quick while trying to turn the key turn the steering wheel back and forth sometime it binds the key switch if that doesnt work let me know you have deeper problems good luck paul
