HELLO, I STARTED THE 4 CYL AN THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. THE LIGHT FLASHED SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN STAYS ON. I WARMED IT AND IDLES VERY ROUGH, ALMOST LIKE IT WAS MISSING 1 CYLINDER, IT SHAKES AND COULD NOT GET PAST 40 MPH. I DROVE IT HOME BY COASTING MOST OF THE TRIP. THE SAME THING OCCURED LAST SUNDAY IN SACREMENTO. I STARTED IT AND RAN ROUGH SO I SHUT DOWN, WAITED, STARTED AGAIN THE ENGINE AND WITHIN TWO MINUTES IT SMOOTHED OUT AND I DROVE 500 MILES FROM THERE WITH NO PROBLEMS.
I HOPE THAT THIS INFORMATION WILL HELP WITH FINDING A SOLUTION. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH,
CARLOS CORONA
It sounds like an ignition problem. Make sure your battery is good and connections are clean. I would start by replacing the plug wires and spark plugs. This is a good tune up procedure anyway and will increase your mileage some. Clean or change the air filter. The obvious thing is to make sure the oil is new and filled to the correct level, not overfilled. Your engine will love you. I hope this helps.

When I start my car cold,it idles very rough, I let it warm up for 5-8 minutes and the idle usually settles down to a normal range. Lately when I start it, it does the same thing but continues to idle rough when I take it out and stop at a light. The check engine light will also flash on and of then just stay on. The check engine light has been on for a diagnosed catalytic converter issue, but the continuous rough idle and the flashing check engine is a new development. Can you give me an idea of possible problems/solutions?
