Subaru misses after overfilling gas tank - 2002 Subaru Outback

Damaged/clogged evap canister. You probably overfilled fuel tank one too many times and caused damage. Evap canister is kind of charcoal filled canister located on your fuel system vent. When tank is overfilled gasoline reaches evap canister and and makes charcoal to became hard like clay. Once that happens fuel tank looses its vent and fuel pump cannot pull fuel because vaccum created inside fuel tank.

Check pipe that connects the fuel filler inlet to the gas tank. Rubber connection at tank can deteriorate

Dirty or low oil, old gas...has your car been parked for an extended period? Add a bottle of HEET to gas tank, and add a bottle of gas tank injector cleaner to eliminate the old/dirty/watery gas...hope this helps.

Possibly overfilled and sucked into the EVAP system .

are you talking about the tank itself or the filler point, it could be a blocked vent to the tank ?

fuel vent Charcoal canister will make it difficult to fill the gas, this canister vents the gas tank and if you overfill the tank then it screws up the Charcoal canister and will need to be replaced, I just found an old canister from the used parts place and had my mechanic replace it, went directly to the gas station and presto no more problem filling gas. DO NOT overfill your tank after replacing canister!

well first have you tried using another pump,and if so are you sure the tank is not full i know these sound simple but fuel gauge cold be faulty ext...but if so the fuel tank pressure could be to high do you or have you had the fuel come back up the filler neck something like a fuel tank overfill valve could be faulty in this case would need to see a prof. mechanic to diagnose ,and last pour gas in with a gas can see what happens you may get some type of answer fegas coming up filler or gauge inop ect...hope this helps

you may have a gas tank vent problem that is causing pressure build up in the tank.

it is possible that the fuel has got into the cannister and you are smelling the fumes from the vent

It's the gas cap tightly in place? Did you overfill it? Can you see any sigh of leakage?

Some times when we overfill our gas tank, the spilled gas gets into cracks or holes in the body of the vehicle and takes a while to evaporate.

If the smell is still strong after one hour, take it to the shop to have it checked for leaks.
