98 manual vw passat cruise control not working any ideas to start and find the problem

• Vacuum Pump

  Remove vacuum hose from vacuum pump seal off.
  • Remove lower instrument panel cover, left.
  • Push servo unit diaphragm in, to do this press brake pedal down by hand until pressure point.
  • Then release brake pedal.
  The diaphragm must not move.

A 16 year old car is bound to start having issues. If it's not a matter of locating and replacing a blown fuse - it could be a failed motor, switch or wiring problem.

I would take out any fuses that I dont need running that kills the battery.

Check the wiring harness, especially the one that goes underneath the dashboard and steering column. There may be bad wires or loose connections that may have caused your cruise control to act up when turning on the signals or the brights. to turn on the fog lights, its the same switch that you use to turn on your head lights. Turn the dial to the right to turn on your head lights and then pull it towards you. thats how you turn your fog lights on

cruise control works when speed is up to 60 km/hr. it's very easy. switch on it on the left side of wheel and that's it. to speed up you maust move it an left side and to speed down you maust move it on the right

The ABS control unit is failing, this is a very common issue with the 98 and 99 model Passats. You will need to have the ABS control unit replaced. You can now purchase the ABS control unit by itself but it is still pricey. Depending on which pump you have will determine which control unit you need to get. The run around $600 - $750.00 plus labor to install. The control unit needs to be installed by some one with a factory type scanner, as the new unit will need to be coded for that vehicle.

When my 1999 Cabrio was new the cruise control went out. It took the dealership and along with a VW expert 10 days to find a pinched harness assembly under the battery box.
