My 2000 Passat 4motion has jumping RPMs when it is in gear and I am stopped then when I am driving it feels like it is "stuttering" to maintain speed or speed up slightly. If I push on the gas harder, I don't feel that stuttering problem. Also, when I brake I can feel it jolt some which isn't normal. The ignitor coils have been changed already as well as other things. It has 109K miles and just passed inspection. Please help?
Throttle Body Cleaning on vehicles without electronic throttle control (most 2003 and down)
You can in most cases repair this slow speed stall or unstable idle by cleaning the engine throttle valve and the idle speed control valve using a product called CRC Spray Throttle valve cleaner. Spray the cleaner into the air intake of the engine with the hose removed from the throttle body, the engine will try to stall so hold up the idle speed manually. Once you have used up about 1/2 can of the cleaner stall the engine out while spraying and turn the key off, disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 minutes and then reconnect and drive the car for a about 25 miles of varied driving modes. If this doesn't cure the problem you may need the fuel injectors professionally cleaned by the dealer service dept.

Check your clutch fluid level, sometimes a seperate reservoir (drivers side on firewall), some clutch systems take fluid from the brake system (check brake fluid). If thats ok then the clutch slave may be failing.
If the clutch fluid is low refill it and check for leaks (or just wait till the symptom comes back). If it's happens often then theres a leak in the line or the slave somewhere.
SOURCE: Check engine light flashes sometimes and runs rough
A flashing check engine light is a critical indicator. That usually means that something went wrong that will damage the emission control system... and that is usually an ignition issue. First off, the OEM plug your car calls for is an NGK irridium... NOT BOSCH and not anything with more than 1 prong. Those NGKs are like 2 bucks and they are the proper plug. Make sure you have these plugs and make sure they are gapped to .028. Next, my suggestion is put all the new stuff on again. Drive it to autozone and have them delete all the codes. Drive it around until the check engine light comes on again, then immediately go back and read the codes. The ECU is smart enough to know which cylinder is misfiring. On these cars, I think they have three banks of two... meaning one "coil" inside the coil pack operates two of the cylinders. So if you get multiple misfires, it's the coil. If you get one misfire it's probably an individual plug wire or plug. Good luck.

Hello,
Check the backpressure in the engine ( remove the oil fill cap when engine is running ). You should feel only a light airflow in and out of the filler cap hole. If there is really pressure, your piston rings are worn out. Rebuild the engine.
Check the compression on each cylinder and the state of the spark plugs.

To check the vacum pump.all you have to do is remove the pipe from the servo, and with the engine running that pipe should be sucking.place finger over the pipe and check. If its not sucking then check the pipe for cracks. If the pipe is ok then replace the pump
