Have you tried pulling up on the backrest while operating the switch?
It sounds like it was run past the gear mesh.

The power seat uses DC motors. To change direction the polarity reverses from one direction to another. If you hear the motor "clicking" when you try to drive it forward, even though it is already forward, this signals the motor brushes are making contact to the commutator. So if it is "clicking" the problem is most likely the rearward seat movement switch itself or bad connection from the seat switch to the motor. If there is no "clicking" sound, this indicates no power is reaching the motor, it is most likely hair, dust or trash that has entered the motor and become lodged under the brushes, preventing failure of the electric circuit to the commutator. Unbolt the seat, remove it from the car and be careful with disassembly and cleaning of the motor, they can be difficult to reassemble as they have permanent magnets. I am not certain on your BMW, but many manufacturers use a motor with an open end that you can manually rotate the motor by hand with a piece of square key stock, this may also dislodge any debris stuck under the brushes and allow the motor to operate.

Take the seat out and turn it over, to see if the gears are stripped, or if something simply became unattached.
It is needs expensive parts, consider a junk yard, or if really desperate, steal them from the passenger seat. Worst case, just lock it into one position that is best for you.

A common failure on this chassis is that the small plastic gears, that drive the recline gearbox, strip and break. These are not available from BMW .... you must buy a complete seat base frame and gearbox assembly ($$$$). Call Bavarian Autosport at 800-535-2002, they offer custom replacement gears for this.

this is a typical problem.. Either the individual motor that operates the back of the seat has gone bad or the bar that connects to the back rest has come off.

Hi Marie Langford Tuten, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? is this an electric seat? do the other parts move when buttons are pressed? or is this a manual seat? thanks
