Engin idles fine up to about 2000 rpm then sputters around 2000 rpm. Above 2000 rpm idls fine. Also, sometims when gas pedal is released when sputtering at about 2000 rpm (idling), headlights dim for a second. When driving, jerking motion is noticed when around 2000 rpm.
First off, is a check engine lite on,if so do you know the codes? It does have a cam sensor, the cam sensor malfunction gives a code reading,in general fuel probs do not give a code this is done bymanually checking fuel press ect....the module does give specific codes as well...I have seen a cam sensor give the prob. you list, BUT TEST BEFORE YOU BUY,you can get your own codes from the a.l.d.l connector, under dash...take a coated jumper wire and push one end into the g .circuit ,the other into the b terminal and watch the lite flashig in the dash,,ie, 2 flashes...pause then 4 flashes is an example....wilf 1
SOURCE: grand prix wont idle
There are 3 things that should be checked.
The idle air control valve (some call it a fuel bypass valve)
Throttle position sensor
and a fuel pressure test done. The idle air control is usually mounted on the throttle body, so is the tps which has a black plastic casing. good luck.

Same problem. 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix V6 3.1L no start problem Question The problem, my car runs great first start of the day but does have a miss fire, and I can drive for hours without a problem, but when I turn it off and try to start again 30 -60 minutes later it chuggles and dies and won't start for a least 3-5 hours later, then runs fine again. It trys to turn over and the battery does not drag, no signs of a bad alternator. Everything has power, all fuses are ok I checked them today. Second trip to repair shop resulted in no 3 fuel injector replaced with good results. Fuel pressure checked out ok, No smoking white or black, fuel filter replace and car had a tune up recently also the mass air flow was replaced supposedly, I am starting to wonder if these parts were actually new used or not put in at all but I am charged anyway this is fourth time to the repair shop however now the third time but this is at no charge by a church member's friend so I am inclined to take his advice and think it is the engine module. Three different auto repair garages tell me the following: either the cam shaft sensor, crank shaft sensor, or ignition module, causing no start or start and chuggle and die problem and bad & loose hoses sucking in air. (From my experience engines don't take in air they leak it out through vacuum leaks.) Apparently the last fix resulted in hand made manifold gaskets I did not know about and may also be causing contamination on my low coolant sensor cause it stays on, however back to the no start problem; my engine is getting to much air I am told, I am incline to think there is a vacuum hose leak somewhere instead. Was also told intake manifold gaskets may have a air leak, bad and loose hoses and possibly the sensor's I mentioned. So before I shove out money I don't have, I am doing some homework and found your site. What do you think is going on. Someone else said I do not have a crank shaft sensor. So I don't know whom to believe.

had the same issue with mine, a full tuneup and a really good cleaning for the throttlebody cleared mine up.

check tps sensor check idle air control valve or iacv for proper func

This vwehicle has a rev limiter, if your trying to rev it up in neutral it will cut out at 2grand.

I should clarify that when the problem at 2000 rpm occurs the car is in park and gas pedal is pushed to increase rpm to around 2000 rpm or above. Around 2000 rpm the engin sputters slightly but still continue to run ok. Sputtering stops when the engin is revved up above 2000 rpm.
Engin light does not come on and there is no code.
