Hi I have a 2002 Corolla with an apexi, when driving it can start to splutter a bit and I have to put my accelerator down fully just to maintain the revs, then as the car slows I have to change down a gear or 2 and really give it revs just so it doesn't stall. Sometimes it stalls anyway and I have to change gears and let the clutch out to force it to start again. Often if it stalls when at low revs. If it stalls and am fully stopped, I have to put the clutch in and have my accelerator down fully when starting and that usually seems to fix the problem temporarily. Also it is slowly getting worse

Most common problem is the IAC(Idle Air Control) valve. But if you say some times work I will suspect the throttle is clogged. Remove the Air hose, apply full throttle and hold, spray carburetor cleaner on clot using thin long nose player clean inside wall and throttle. don't spray directly inside because the carb cleaner is to aggressive for some of the gasket.
Good Luck

SOURCE: car stalls when accelerating in low gears

I had similar issues on mine. I bought it from the Good Will for less than $1000. :)
It's been totaled i believe at least twice.
Anyways, replace the fuel filter. It's about the size of an oil filter and is very easy to replace.
Also, replace the spark plugs with some good titanium type plugs. They're like $4 from Wal Mart.
Next, put some fuel injector cleaner every other tank of gas or so. This will definitely help.
Good Luck

Try moving up 1 grade of fuel, if you are using 87, put in 89. See if this helps.
