Jerking shifting gears

1996 Pontiac Bonneville 184,000. Seems to start out in higher gear. When you take off under easy acceleration, shifts fine. If you take off under heave acceleration, when it tried to shift into higher gear, the car just starts "bug jummping". Let off the accelerator and shifts thens seems to be ok until you stop and start again.

May need a transmission or overhaul that one so take it easy on it. changing the fluid and filter may help but sounds like the valve body is dirty and the trany cant shift like a new one.

SOURCE: transmisssion shifts slow when going from 1st to 2nd gear.

Try to get some lubrication on any cables &/or linkages to transmission, it sounds like they are sticking a bit.

I have a 1996 pontiac bonneville 3800 and when I put it in drive to take off It will rev to 3000 rpm before taking off. It doesn't shift hard through any gears and seems to run fine after 20 mph.

Usually dirty transmission fluid/filter (no noises) You can try adding a full bottle of Lucas Oil Transmission Stabilizer fluid...you don't need to drain anything...(could also just be low tranny fluid) Follow the instructions, warm tranny, motor running...add full bottle...manually shift through gears...The cost is about $11. even at Walmart...Hope this helps.

Jerking accelerating

This may be normal but you can adjust your driving to reduce the impact. To speed up the warm up process of the catalytic converters, the power train computer holds first gear a little longer than normal. This causes your car to get higher in the rpm range than normal, at part throttle, which causes the hard shift. On your first drive, try NOT to accelerate while the car is in first gear--it won't take long for you to learn how far this is.

Automatic 1996 Pontiac Bonneville wont shift gears

Transmissions have so many parts so it's difficult to diagnose. I would have the transmission filter changed first. Usually that is the most common shifting problem. If that doesn't fix the problem it may be a little more costly.

High RPM shifting?

seems as if the trans isnt shifting as it should and needs to be checked (could be the shift solenoid not working properly or gears are sticking)

Two problems with '97 Pontiac Bonneville 1: automatic transmission does not shift into higher gear at correct time as it once did, resulting in engine running in higher rpms before gear shift occurs. 2:...

You may have low vacuum pressure which can screw up the fuel regulator as well as shift points. I would start by checking for vacuum at idle, and if low, check for a disconnected, broken or kinked hose.
