Passing smog My 2000 Jetta V6 GLX has the check engine light on. The code is P1340 - Camshaft Position Sensor and Crank Position Sensor. I got the engine light turned off and had a pretest smog done. It failed at 2400 rpms showing a timing calibration fault. I've been told I need to replace the timing chains. Will changing the Camshaft and Crank sensors instead help the car pass smog? If so, by how much would this help?

I doubt it as you have stated that it shows a calibration fault . This will be from the variable valve timing assembly on the cam shaft/s that is altering the valve timing. The timing chain may be faulty but you should be hearing it to be that bad.

SOURCE: replacing bad camshaft position sensor

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

The sensor is located on the left hand rear side of the block (near the bell housing). It is held in place by a 10mm bolt. It's to the right of the exhaust manifold (LH - radiator side) on the V6. Once you purchase the new sensor you'll be able to identify it on the engine. The connector to this sensor is located in the illustration.

SOURCE: 1997 Honda Civic did not pass smog due to O2

the best way to reset it is with a scan tool.
disconnecting the battery for one minute will also remove the code.BUT
if your smog test uses an OBD scan as part of the process, then there will be a problem, because the monitors will not have been set,as they are reset if the battery is disconnected..
most tests allow only one monitor missing, and not the catalyst .
A drive cycle will have to be done to set the monitors.
Typically cold start coolant temp less than 50F,idle for 2 minutes no air condition, accelerate at half throttle to 50mph then drive 3 minutes with a/c on at 50mph steady.decelerate to 10mph without using brakes..Accelerate to 60mph and drive for 5 minutes at steady speed without a/c
deccelerate without braking and drive for 1 minute at 40mph.
stop the car ,use braking.
Shut off the car and add 4 gallons of gas.do not shut off the car for more than 5 minutes.
drive in 3rd gear or overdrive off with rpm 3000 for 1 minute.
decelerate to 10mph.without braking
accelerate to 40 mph in 4th gear.,or overdrive on
decelerate without braking to 10mph.
test complete.
this will set the o2 sensor heater ,o2 sensor, catalyst, evap purge.and the other monitors.

SOURCE: Failed CA smog test "MIL/Check Engine Light", computer data wiped

No this is not right. If you remove the battery everything resets anyways. If they are talking about relearn procedure, it should only require 50 miles. But if the light is on than either they did something wrong, created another problem, or there was already another one existing. Have the code read and let me know what it is. I'm in Ca too and used to prep european cars for smog, so I do know what I'm looking for. How did the rest do? What were the readings(if possible)?

Passing smog

code p 1340 refers to crank position sensor and camshaft position sensor signals out of sequence
the results of the pretest smog test at 2400 rpm suggest that the cam advance solenoid or system is failing
that will alter the sequence of the signals resulting in the code and failing of the smog test
as to answer you question , I am not convinced at this point but I consider the cam advance system to be at fault and would be testing in that area
