My glove box was locked, and wouldn't open. I forced the latch open, and broke the latch. Can I just replace the latch, or is it the whole locking mechanism? I don't really care to lock the box anyway.

okay this how you do it you lift the handle up on the car and you move it back and it should go back only when the handle is up

Unfortunately, you will have to remove the panel of the door, Use flathead screwdriver to pry open. It is very likely the spring fell off.

Usually the problem is that the handle has not returned to the fully down position, probably because it's getting old/rusty.
When this happens on my Outback I just push the handle down until I hear it engage, then pull up and the door opens.
Some people lube the handle regularly. I haven't had to yet.

there should be a piece of plastic or metal that hold the bar and is connected to the outer handle.

You should open the tailgate and pull the handle and at the same time push the hook back so that it is not in the way of the lock bar when go to close it. Sounds like it just got jammed and should be able to be fixed with out having to replace. Assuming that it is not rusted and seized.
