Hi Sherman

You have to do this test to find out why the steering is heavy.
after you check the steering fluid level and top it up if needed.
start the engine let it IDLE try to turn steering and feel how hard or soft is.
Now rev the engine up to 2500 rpm and keep holding the rev. test the steering while you still holdind the rev.
if you feel no difference, the problem is the steering rack it self.
if the steering get softer while you rev up, the problem is the power steering pump.
Good Luck

EPS light

any vehicle of that age will have power steering so a few basic checks to start with ,the power steeering is powered by a pump which is belt driven so check all the drive belts are in good condition/not loose etc ,next check the power steering fluid level, there will be a small resovoir ,usually opaque, with a black screw off top, with pipes leading back to the pump, there will be min/max mark on side of this so make sure the fluid is in that range other than that you will have to take to a repair shop as other causes require expertise

Heavy steering on 1989lotus esprit

When is the last time the front end has been lubricated, just a thought. My 1991 Lotus Esprit SE also has heavy steering which is normal for these racing suspension's. Its to compensate for over steering, which is easier to do with power steering.

Power steering becomes heavy. i need to use more Strength to control it

check drive belt for the power steering and check belt tension. Check oil level in reservoir. Have a pressure test done on the power steering pump to check for stuck relief valves.

My power steering went heavy whilst driving at 50mph and i cannot drive it myself as its too heavy without power steering ('05 peugeot 307 cc) I have checked the power steering fluid which is at max and...

hi Jo,the power steering is powered by the fanbelt and if its slipping will cause it to go heavy but a light would come up on the dash to tell you the alternator was not charging.so if not the belt,it could be the electrics for the pwr steering need looking into, this is easier to get on the dealers diagnostic computer which will show up the exact fault.and would save any guesswork.

Range rover l322 2002 heavy power steering renewed

The Solenoid fitted on the Steering Rack is not getting the command from The Body Control Unit. Kindly Replace your BCM and then your problem is solved. You can try to make sure by giving direct current of 12v to the solenoid and check the Steering. if it works then simply change the BCM as it's not giving d command to the Solenoid. Salman EiD

Can you tell me why my volvo 850 t5 estate the steering is very heavy, plenty of steering fluid? sudenly becomes heavy, will then go back to normal then heavy again.

sounds like your power steering is failing, get it checked at a garage asap, steering is important when going fast :), probably needs steering wheel taken apart and power steering components checked for wear/damage.

I cant find the stick to check power steering levels

If you mean the fluid level in the power steering container ,it's marked on the power steering fluid container under the hood (min - max). There's no stick like the engine oil measuring stick. Keep the level at 'max' and you'll have no problems.
