I have a 2006 Toyota tacoma 4X4. The universal joints are clicking when going from reverse to drive, but there is a clicking noise when I tap the brakes in reverse and forward. It sounds like the universal joints. Is the noise probable from the slack in the drive train from the U-joints????

I would recommend pulling the driveshaft and inspect the U-joints, if that is not the problem it is possibly caused by the pinion output shaft in the rear end, that was the case with mine. Hope this helps get you going in the right direction

SOURCE: replace ball joints

Remove in this order: wheel, loosen the 4 lower ball joint set bolts, cotter pin and nut from tie rod, tie rod from ball joint bracket, ball joint from lower control arm, 4 lower ball joint set bolts, ball joint from suspension. Install is reverse but don't tighten the 4 lower ball joint set bolts.

torque is as follows:
ball joint to control arm- 112 ft-lbs
Tie rod nut- 67 ft-lbs
lower ball joint set bolts- 83 ft-lbs
remember to use a new cotter pin

SOURCE: universal joint is making a clicking noise

You have c/v joints not universals...first you need to figure out which side is making noise, generally you will find a torn boot around the bad one....Job is not terribly difficult, best to get a chilton or haynes manual for our car to guide you through it, if you haven't done lots of work like this though. Complete axles are easier to do and not very expensive (depends on car) shops set their own hourly rates so it largely depends on what the "going rate" is in your area.

Yup, U-joints do squeeek and a a good place to start. Does the joint show any signs of rusting? If so, it's your culprit.

Have toyota tacoma 2003 4x4 sr5 have clunking sound seems like coming from drive line help plz

A clunking sound is usually a universal joint that is going out. Check the joints by getting under the truck and trying to shake the drive shafts near the joints. The other cause could be the pinion (front or rear) has developed slack. You may see some slack at the pinion bearing of the axle housing when you shake the drive shaft.

I have a 2006 Tacoma. When driving and turning

Check your suspension in the front for worn or damaged parts to include upper A frame retaining bolts, especially if you've been four wheeling. This is most likely a ball joint or Tie rod or connecting rod issue. The only other location to look would be the CV joint. In most cases you would hear a clicking sound when your are turning and driving, if it have front or 4 wheel drive.

Rear end noise

Classic symptom of dry universal joints. Once they start to pop and squeak you can't just grease them you need to replace them. You'll need to drop the driveshaft to know for sure.
