Odometer not working on 1997 suburban

most old cars have a speedo cable.
is the odometer dead too. (we need that answer now)

there are 3 class evolutionary systems.
cable
electric sender to cluster
and sender to PCM and PCM drives cluster.
but honda does this on diffr, dates than most cars. (i learned)

so lets do that. we login to alldata.com and look , so can you at any time,
once a month i do random cars.
what engine, sometimes this varies by engine, and trans.
neither stated so Ill toss coin each time.

has electronic (hall) speed sensor VSS and runs
engine, cruise. odometer and cluster.

the 96 has no speedo cable, and works in modern mode, very advance for this time
also any scan tool on earth fits the PCM scan port
and if VSS is dead, it tells you that with a DTC , vss dead.
saving all that work wondering why it dont work.

if only cluster fails, and both speedo and odometer then its bad.
if only speedo fails but not odometer , then speedo meter is bad.
its that easy.

and in USA< connect any scan tool and see if VSS died.

the usa 96, 1.0L 3cyl has the VSS sensor in the speedo
and when the cable snaps, Speedo to transaxle flex drive cable.

the odometer goes dead
and Vss goes dead.
easy huh, if all 3 are dead.
but if speedo ONLY goes dead, that means ITS dead.
vss= veh.speed sensor. or MPH sensor.

You may need another speedometer. The speed sensor sends a signal to both the speedo and the odometer. So if the sensor fails, both meters would stop working.
The speedo gets power from the same circuit as the warning lights.

If the speedo does not work but the odometer does, the problem may be in the speedo head on the dash. If the odometer also does not work the problem may be the speed sensor in the transmission.

If the speedo works and the odometer does not, I would say its the odometer that has failed. The speed sensor in the transmission works for both components so that leaves the odometer.

depending on the model and year there are so many sensors and solenoids on the trans and engine that it is going to be hard to fix without a scan tool.......but if this started at the same time the odometer and the speedo quit working i would be looking at the speed sensor in the trans and then the speed sensor that is made in the speedo head that both can make the speedo head and the odometer not work......i hope that this info will help you and if ican be of any other help let me know.......let me and fixya know if this was any help to you and a thumbs up would be appreciated.....good luck and have a blessed day............

clean the 2 wire connector on the speed sensor on top of trans, driver side, rear of trans.

VSS is hard to remove in rust climates so hope it's the connector.

If you replaced the sensor and still have same probllem. Then the problem is in the cable or display. You will have to trace all wires to see if there are any broken wires. You can use an ohmeter to test wires but not sure how you would do that while in motion. Is your check engine light on/

it's most likely the cluster if one function works and the other doesn't. And, you likely have an electronic vehicle speed sensor that sends a signal to your analog cluster that then dispays your speed and odometer.
