Because the heater is getting cold, that indicates low coolant. It leaked out and the leak needs fixing, but as soon as the engine cools off, refill the coolant and keep it full. Never add coolant to a hot engine without the engine running. Your electric fan might not be working. The fan moved air through the radiator and air circulated the same way when the car is moving. Check that.

If you can see your water pump, feel around the neck of it for moisture. Any moisture there means the pump leaks and needs replacing. Some cars have the water pump behind the cam belt. You can't get to it without a lot of hard work- get that done by a qualified mechanic if you can't find your leak elsewhere, such as a leaking hose or bad radiator cap.

If your electric fan doesn't work, that might be the whole problem. Usually the fan relay fails before the actual fan. Replacing the relay will solve the problem if that's it. Good luck. China OBD2 car diagnostic tools wholesale on CareUCar

SOURCE: Temperature Gauge Always On Cold

As long as your gauge is still moving up, there's no real problem. You have heat coming from the heater. It's only a problem if it's getting too hot. What's going on is that you don't let the vehicle run long enough, and it's so cold outside that the engine stays cold. It raises in temp when your stopped because there's no airflow through the radiator. The thermostat just heats up the engine block, and won't change the reading on the gauge. When this goes bad your car will overheat in just a few miles.

SOURCE: engine warning light 2004 focus temperature rising

change your thermostat, and your temperature sensor. The sensors can have a tiny crack in them and cause a lot of problems. Once this is done you should notice a difference. Special note, check to ake sure your fan is coming on, and that your water pump is good. Remember if you change your water pump, you must change your timing belt. If you don't you will be replacing them both in under 6 months. Also make sure your coolant is still good.

SOURCE: what causes 1991 toyota camry to over heat? we put

Change the radiator cap, it may be the wrong pressure rating which will cause the coolant to boil at a much lower temperature than designed.

SOURCE: my car overheat after radiator overhaul, what else

When the car is completely cool,check the electric fan(s) for smooth rotation.

Clean/check/change the thermo sensor,contact and wire.

Excavate air pocket in coolant system / check for head gasket leak

This test will kill two birds with one stone.

===

MAKE SURE THE COOLANT SYSTEM and ENGINE IS COLD!

RAN THIS TEST IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA ONLY!

You will spill some coolant during this air pocket purge test.......BE KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT and ANIMAL please clean up after the test!

===

Put the front end on a pair of ramp or park your car on a VERY STEEP HILL (radiator facing top of the hill) .

Top of the coolant reserve tank

Let it ran for 10-15 minutes.

Monitor for air pockets escaping from coolant reserve tank.

Small amount of bubbles is OK at 1-5 minute mark

After the thermostat open up (after 195 F warm up) at
5-12 minute mark or after high idle you should see less bubbles.

If you do not see any in rush of bubbles then your thermostat may be partially stuck or rusted badly inside the thermostat hosing.

Give the thermostat host few gentle taps.

If you see larger bubbles surfacing after 15 minutes then should do a hydrocarbon (HC) dye test to test for potential head gasket leak.

Let engine cold down and top off coolant reserve tank.

Start monitor for coolant lost

===

A coolant flush is require every 2 years or 24,000 miles.

I recommend the thermostat that has a relief pop-let to reduce the change of burst radiator and coolant hoses.

Make sure you get a new thermostat gasket,black RTV and fresh coolant for the job.

Volkswagen Passat 2002 overheats when in traffic/stationary

Unfortunately you've bought a European car towards the end of its useful life. Next it's headliner is going to drop down and the door panels all start clicking, suspension rubbers are going to fail and the list goes on.

Make sure on that car, the lower engine cowling is still fitted. Some people remove this as it can make a noise at speed, especially if it is split, however this directs air flow across the engine, and causes a low pressure area, which helps this effect.
If you remove that lower engine cowl, then air will not flow efficiently.
Next, remove and check the operation of the thermostat.
Check that the engine coolant is clean, there is no sign of rust in the system, which could be blocking the radiator.
With your hand, or with an infrared temperature sensor, when the engine is hot and I know this sounds a bit dangerous, which is can be so take care, feel the radiator from top to bottom or take a temperature reading. You are feeling to see if the temperature is too disproportionate from top to bottom. If it feels this way, then it might well be that the radiator core has become blocked.

Another check to make is that coolant/anti freeze ratio is around 50/50. Anti freeze helps even out internal temperatures and improves engine performance and longevity.

Another check to make is that with the radiator/expansion cap off, that there is no bubbling in the coolant. If you have bubbling, then perform a system pressure check as you may have a head gasket blown

MY HOT AND COLD METER KEEPS RISING AND FALLING

If the fans are electric, then replace the fan control module.
If the fan is belt driven, replace the fan clutch.

There is a chance that the thermostat is failing, but if the temperature fluctyation occurs during driving, as opposed to stopped and idling, then it's probably the fans.

Replace the thermostat with one rated to around 190 degrees or as close to that that you can find,if that does'nt work you need a temperature senser.

Heat gauge

Before getting too upset about this, try changing the temperature sender. Can't tell you where it is but it is usually on or near the thermostat housing but some engines have it on the intake manifold or rear of cyl head.

The temperature gage is slow rising like it normally does.

Sounds to me like you have a bad thermostat. If you know how to change it you can give it a shot. If you dont know what I'm talking about, take your car in to a mechanic and tell em to have a look at your thermostat.

2002 Kia Rio Temperature gauge rising a bit

It could be engine overheating, once you are turning the defroster on you are acutally turning on the compressor which is usually used for AC. If the engine has a drain it will over heat a bit which sounds like what you are experiencing. Check to make sure your thermostat is not sticking and staying closed causing the temperature change. Did they change the thermostat when they did the water pump? If they didn't I would suggest you do that sooner than later since you have 123K miles on the car. Most likely this will fix your problem.

Overheating and heater not work

there is a valve on the water pump and one on the thermostat housing open those up one at a time until you get a little bit of antifreeze come out then tighten them back up. All you will be doing is bleeding the air out of the cooling system. my car was doing the same thing after I changed my thermostat.
