Something seriously loose or worn:

- steering box mounts
- steering column universal joint or end clamp
- steering box inner ball joints
- tie rod ends
- outer ball joints
- wheel centre hub nut
- wheel stud nuts

A simple test is to jack up both front wheels and place the vehicle on axle stands. Then have someone hold the steering wheel, grab a front wheel at the 9-and-3 o'clock position, and shake it hard in and out. If you can feel slack or looseness, or the person holding the steering wheel can, you have a dangerous fault which should be fixed ASAP.

Whining noise at speed 35/40 left front side wheel 2000 infinity qx4

Try driving at 35/40, so you can hear the noise, try swerving (just a little) to the left, if the noise goes away, when you swerve, you most likely have a bad wheel bearing on that side.

What makes my 2002 Pontiac Firebird grind when driving and/or turning?

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Jack up front end and spin wheels by hand and listen for grind. Same for rear wheels. Make sure brake linings are good all around. Do the swerve test. Drive down road bout 40mph and swerve moderately one side to other. If noise gets louder with weight shifted to one side more than other its most likely a wheel bearing.

My 2004 Vue makes a very consistent winding type sound while driving. It starts out low and increases to a point and never veries until I slow down. What could that be? No front end deviation, no...

Try swerving back and forth when you hear this. If the pitch changes while swerving one way or the other, it is probably the wheel bearing and it needs a new hub. Not too hard to change.

1999 subaru forester growls from rear wheels

Hello, from the sounds of it you have a wheel bearing out. One way to usually verify that it is a wheel bearing is to drive down that road and swerve side to side to transfer the wieght of the vehicle back and forth. If it is a wheel bearing you will notice a change in the sound. If you hear a change in the sound figure out which side it is coming from. If when you swerve right and it's louder or makes more noice then it will be the left bearing and vice versa.

Are my tires causing my car to swerve and follow the cracks?

Usually caused by unusually wide tyres/wheels. This is called in the UK 'tramlining' and is nothing to worry about though can be disconcerting. Owing to the increased width of Z3 spec. tyres over standard tyres there is more of a tendency to follow abrupt changes in the road surface. Keep those hands at 'Ten to Two' on the steering wheel.
