2002 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.2l has spark, getting gas to cylinders, good compression, won't start

Engine died at 55 m.p.h, cylinders getting gas, compression good, spark coming from coil packs. Almost sounds like it's trying to start sometimes, no backfire. No rattle from the timing chain area, car has less than 80k. No idiot lights came on when engine died.

It was my understanding that if the crank or cam sensors went out, there would be no fuel and/or no spark?

  • Mai Lor Mar 26, 2014

Hi Bill. You're right if it's completely bad. But if it send Only weak signal, you still get gas and spark, but can't get to start. And one thing the coil might be weak too. Good Luck

SOURCE: jumped timing?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.

SOURCE: 1992 pontiac starts, quietly dies and backfires loudly on restart

It sounds like to me you are having problems with your fuel injectors.  In situations like these there are soooooo many different variables and possible problems, but the fact that the car is backfiring makes me believe that you are getting too much fuel in because that is what makes are car backfire.  When fuel makes it to the cat converter or muffler it will burn there and cause the backfire.  My suggestion would be to start the process of elimination with a good fuel injector cleaner.  The only one that recommend is called Greased Lightening and can be purchased at Napa and O'Reilley auto parts.  If you don't have one of these near you I would go with Techron.  Let me know if I can help you with anything else.  Thanks for letting me help you with your problem and I would appreciate an honest rating on the help that I gave you.  Thanks for using FixYa!

Have a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE. Turned off while driving, sounded like it lost gas to engine. press gas pedal and it made bogging out sound, like it was flooded. What should i troubleshoot?,

Well Jeff if you think it is flooded I'd start by pulling the spark plugs and see if they are wet with fuel . If they are clean them or replace them. If not wet , I would check for fuel pressure , you can get a fuel pressure gauge at harbor freight fairly cheep. On the fuel rail there is a black cap, un screw it an screw the pressure gauge on to it. Crank the engine over a few times an see what the pressure is, it should be 55 psi. And if you have fuel pressure check for spark, pull off a plug wire and put in a spark test , you can buy one at harbor freight or auto parts store for $5-$10 .If it has spark you would need to do a compression test. You can get one of those for $30 bucks .How many miles does the car have . What engine ? 3800 V-6 this engine should have the timing chain replaced at 150,000 miles . have seen them jump time causing them to die and not restart. Should have 150 to 175 psi compression depending on the ware on the engine. Last one I did when the timing jumped , it bent an exhaust valve .

Having no compression not able to go over 20 miles hearing a wishtle sound when pressing on the gas under the hood by the driver side of the car.

Have the engine tested for compression. A healthy engine will have 150+ psi on each cylinder. If your compression is very low, or there is great variation between cylinders, It's time for an overhaul.

Pontiac grand am se 2002 won't turn over and

my pontiac did the same thing and all i had to do was replace the 40amp fuse. you can have someone turning the key while you hit the starter from underneath, if it starts then you need a new starter, if it dont then no, its something else. mine did the exact same thing and it was the 40amp fuse under the hod.

The engine rotates but won,t start. installed a new fuel filter, spark plugs(gapped @ .040"), new spark plug wires, and a new camshaft sensor. the car might have run out of gas. the data link...

Hi

It sounds like a timing issue if you are getting fuel, spark and air then I would look at that first. is the crank shaft sensor good?

The engine will turn over but won"t start

Check for spark and gas.

If you spray starting fluid into the intake and it starts for a few seconds it could be a fuel pump or circuit that is bad, assuming there is gas in the tank.

If it doesn't start, then there is likely an ignition problem.
Test the spark from the spark plug wires to make sure.

If the ignition system doesn't have spark, check to see if the crankshaft position sensor is faulty.

Good luck on this repair.

Car will turn over but will not start unless gas is fully applied

check for massive vacuum leak at intake and also check timing ...compression test alone does not eliminate timing as suspect

2001 pontiac grand am w/ 2.4l 4cyl

I disagree with the testing of coils, it has proved fault many times. I would check fuel rail pressure, as fuel pump commonly lose there abilty to build pressure but don't totally die. A DIS spark system should have the abilty to jump 1" with proper battery voltage. With good plugs the spark should be blue in color. The starter may be getting hot, or if it comes against compression when the engine attempts to start, it will do it's job and go back in.
