The pk3 system has a sensor ring around the lock cylinder these go bad a relearn will not fix this because no security code is being sent to the pass key module.

  • wq2121 Mar 23, 2014

You know, that is interesting... I have the same year, and about once in 10 starts, the "security light" comes on, but the car runs just fine. Also, I can EASILY remove my key from the ignition, once started, and it runs fine. I THOUGHT that the car was supposed to die after about 1 mile if that "special" key with the chip on it ($75 to replace, unless you buy one on ebay) isn't in the ignition. I had a key made so I can JUST open the door, since I lock myself out every once in a while, but I never tried that key to see if it will start the van! I'll have to do that someday! I've heard that these cylinder locks on the ventures (and probably other models) do wear out and allow the key to be removed while it is running. I've also heard that sometimes, the van just won't start (bad sensor, as the prior response mentioned). I guess my mechanical parts in my cylinder are bad, but the sensor is good. I know... I should have it replaced, but it has a 195,000 miles on it and doesn't burn a drop of oil, so I'm really trying to see if I can get 200k out of it! That is a very expensive job to have done, too, unless you do it yourself, but I don't have the special tools for that....

To replace this does not require any special tools just remove the cover around steering column and remove attaching screws. to replace the lock cylinder there is a small hole in column that you insert a drill bit in the accessory position rotate to on and cylinder slides out..

Why do think the key security is bad? If you still have a factory key, this is not the problem...if no factory key, you can take your VIN number or original key to GM dealer to get new key that they will program for you...Check for dirty battery connections:)

2001 Chevy venture won't start

Do you have the resistor pellet in your key? The one with the short wire on each side of the key shank? If yes, I can provide a bypass procedure. It involves using an ohmmeter to measure the key resistance and making a small resistor set to simulate the key. You will also need a soldering iron and a package of resistors you can buy from radio shack. Let me know if you want the details.

How do i bypass the pass lock security system, start then shuts off

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, Try a spare key that is newer or used less. The pins wear down and so do the keys causing security fail. 2nd trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shutting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix... If anything on this page helps you, please remember to comment or give me a thumbs up on the myfixya sight so i can have a better rating to help more people on this. Thanks

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

My 2000 grand prix needs the key reprogramed. I lost the original key and now the new one wont program on its own.

Make sure you have the right type of ignition keys, there should be a stamp on the keys "PK3" which is the right ignition keys you need to have for your passlock system.

Auto Relearn:
Time required, approximately 10 minutes.

Insure that the battery is fully charged.
Turn the ignition switch from the OFF position to the CRANK position attempting to start the vehicle. The vehicle will start and then stall.
Leave the ignition switch in the ON position while observing the security indicator.
When the security indicator turns off, which can take up to 10 minutes, turn the ignition switch off. Wait 10 seconds.
The BCM and the PCM will learn the new code on the next start attempt.

You may have to get somebody with a scan tool to reset the computer codes to make this work.

Thank oyu for using fixya and good luck

Truck wont crank each time

It sounds to me like that you have several different issues with you vech and on the pass lock system will not cause all the problems listed how ever it will cause the no crank and after five min or 30 min start it is most likely the pass lock sensor unless your truck has a pk3 system (the key will have a + or pk3 stamped on it)If it is a pk3 system then it may be the theft detturent module if ton a pk3 system then most likely a pass lock sensor . Take the vech to some one that can ck for codes and find out all the codes set in the vech. This will tell a whole lot about what is going on with the vech .Im not very good on drivabilty problems. The evap leak and the mis fire will not be related to the pass lock problem.
