Transmission shifted fine changed motors in 89 chevy Silverado now I have no drive or overdrive adjusted tv cable worked fine for about a day then going uphill it downshifted and wouldn't go to drive or overdrive. Adjusted tv cable again still same thing
Check that you have connected correctly the cables for the torque converter solenoid / servo unit as it may not be making good contact after the engine change . Also as the battery was disconnected for a time I would use a scanner to reset the CPU program as the program may be corrupted from the lost battery power.

Are you sure the TV ( trans shift cable at the throttle valve) cable is correctly adjusted?? Without line pressure readings, I can only guess that the D3/Part throttle check ball is missing, if it is a trans problem
If the TV is correct, I am assuming that the TV cable is pulled tight at WOT.
Did you check the throttle (ACCEL) cable to be sure that the carb goes wide open when your accel pedal is on the floor?? This must be done with someone in the car and a second person looking at the carb. Without doing this, you do not know if you have WOT. Without WOT, the trans will not de-tent and shift down.

transmission shift solenoid is stuck open this is a common vehicle issue in automatics and not particular to any make or model vehicle 15 dollar part and arm and leg for labor if taken in
heres an idea to try
take out the transmission filter and replace with new one make sure to take not of any metal debry in trans pan this indicates the trans had sheered its gears down and a trans rebuild is needed
the transfilter needs to be changed at a certain milage interval they can get clogged up
there is a kit you buy for your truck at any parts store
its an easy change hour of time unbolt trans pan unbolt trans filter and put new one in
kit comes with new seals less than an hour you can do it yourself
to overdrive you would feel a difference in shift badley if it was that something to keep in mind

IT IS NOT GOING INTO NEUTRAL. IT HAS LOST THE DIRECT DRIVE CLUTCH PACK INTERNALLY. SOUNDS LIKE IT IS HIGH MILEAGE. IF SO AND YOU CHANGE THE FLUID IT CLEANS UP ALL THE VARNISH IN THE TRANNY AND THE END RESULT IS TRANNY MALFUNCTIONS DEPENDING ON WHAT KIND OF CARE IT HAS HAD IN THE PAST.

Dirty trans filter, stickey trans solinoid,or your torque converter is not unlocking. If you can due it yourself try running some trans flush then replace the filter.
