Someone went to pop the trunk using the button on the driver side door. When they touched it, both the trunk and fuel door buttons fell down inside the hole they covered up. How can I retrieve the pieces and hopefully repair them to a working status (especially since I only have a 1/4 tank of gas!!)

This sounds like a bad control or broken wire inside the door, you will need to remove the door panel and check for broken wires, also remove the controls and make sure all connectors are connected good and tight, this is where i would start also just check all of the fuses.

try spraying some lubricant on the latches.

There is a wire broken in between the door and door jam. Slice the black boot the holds all the wires "carefully". Mine was the large orange wire. Spiced back with solder and heatshrink tubing.

Sorry but i have no idea where they might be or how to get to them.
i had to remove the interior door panel to retrieve them. Now to get them to work I have to order a door harness to replace what it apparently bad wiring that is also causing the door locks on the drivers side, the passenger windows and fuel and trunk release are not working properly.
