Dealer said it is the alternator and gave us a quote. They then called back and said they needed a larger alternator with more amps...cost new is $643.62.....that price seems too high. My concern is would all of the gauges and engine shut down while driving if it were the alternator?
They would if the battery ran down from the alternator not working
You can see the prices on any auto parts site like Napa
I have no idea why anyone would be at a dealer, just to pay
more, for what you can do yourself or any local repair shop
You need only what came with the vehicle ,the way it was built
I wouldn't believe a thing I was told by a dealer if I was face to
face in the conversation
On Napa Auto Parts it shows a 105 & 145 amp alternator
The 145 is $195.00 & they are not doing you any favors
SO-get it out of the dealer
If you go to Rock Auto.Com where everyone buys their parts,
you will find, brand new not reman OEM Delco Parts for no more
than $150.00
Long way from $150 OEM GM AC Delco verse the dealer
for the same part NEW for $643.00
Not to be sarcastic, but I learned that at 18 years of age & that
was 51 years ago for me
Yes it would. when the alternator stops working, your car will run for awhile on the battery alone. how long depends on size of battery, what you have on, such as lights, and how much power the car takes to keep engine running, all the different controllers in the car.
it seems kind of strange they would come back and say you a bigger alternator than what they told you, considering they are a dealer. yes bigger alternators are an option trucks for snowplow options and automakers put bigger alternators in cars with more power options. you may want to ask why the change and what the car came with.

Ck the charge rate at the battery posts. The proper range is 23.6 to 14.2v , The higher the voltage the llower the amps. Ie; at 13v Alternator is about 10% under capacity. @ 12v it is charging at max capacity. @ 15 v isthe alt is not charging but frying your battery. 9amps is ok if battery is fairly charged but at start up it should sit on 13-13.6 volts. for about 15 seconds the start climbing to less charge towards 14.2.

you will have to drive it to the dealer, if it leaves you stranded call a tow truck. all 2007 and up gm cars and trucks should have a 5 year 100k warranty so you should be covered as long as the check engine lamp is not flashing it is not a serious issue if it acts up, try pulling over shutting it off and restarting to see if it resets

Your information was very helpful. As to why we were at te dealer...when the vehicle broke down that is where we were on the interstate so we coasted into the cal dealer lot.
