Labor cost replace timing chain

I took my jeep to a mechanic last month because there was a rod that was out of place so it was knocking, I still haven't gotten my jeep back because now they are telling me that the timing is off on it and that wasn't even a problem when i took it to them I've already had to pay about 1500 to fix and repair the engine, and that wasn't even to the guy i took it to the mechanic i took it to wants to charge me another 1200 for what little work he did, so my question is How much and how long does it take to fix a timing chain/ belt? and should i have to pay for the mess up they caused?

I need to know exactly what they intend to do on the engine, you are just to vague.

Testimonial: "Well they told me just a few min ago that the timing is off and they need to take the engine out and fix the timing he didn't tell me if it was the chain/ belt but i think it might be and he said that it would take up to 6-8 hours more to do all this I'm just getting really upset cause like i said they have had my jeep for a long time, they never really give me much information on what they are going to do. Do they really have to take the engine out again ?"

Then it must be the valve timing.

SOURCE: water pump replacement

First, I'll tell you what I used to tell customers that did this: Do you bring your own uncooked eggs to the diner?
The cost will vary... each shop charges a different labor rate. Without encountering any unforseen problems, I doubt if the cost will be more than $140 (excluding antifreeze). But, when approached with this while running a shop, I used to also add the "markup" I would have made on the pump as well... after all, why would a shop want to do the same job and make less than they would normally??? So if they charge you 20 or 25 more $, dont be surprised!

If you have the same pulley arrangement that most 4.0 engines have that pulley is an idler not a tensioner. Your power steering pump has a pivot bolt, and a slide under the pump. You adjust belt tension using the pump.

SOURCE: 2002 Jeep Liberty P0174 code and mech has changed the o2 sensor

Can't tell you exactly what is wrong but the one thing you said is of concern...Map sensor should not be full of oil. If it is, I'd want to know why. In finding the reason for that, you may also find the reason why you are having a problem.
Jeep uses two kinds of engine crank venting. you either have a pcv valve or an orifice controlled system. If either are obstructed it can overpressure the crankcase and cause all kinds of problems.
Years of experience tells me this isn't something I can guess at and be 100% sure I have the right answer but based on what you said, I'd look there first!

SOURCE: 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee timing belt/chain replacement (not 4WD)

I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS A TIMING CHAIN. IT SHOULD BE CHANGED AT OR ABOUT 100,000 MILE. BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE CHANGED THEN, JUST INSPECTED.

2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo(160 miles)Engine makings screeching/knocking noise.Checked pulleys and removed serpentine belt and noise persisted. Mechanic stated rebuild/replacement required. Ideas?

When I read --mechanic suggest a rebuild / replacement --I always suggest to find a trained mechanic for a second opinion
The book shows that it is a 5.7 L engine EZD, EZH(vin8 =T) 2009-12 manufacture
It has a timing chain and has 1 spring loaded chain adjuster and one fixed chain guide
I suspect that the guide surfaces are worn to metal - screeching-- and the knocking is a badly worn chain just about ready to break

Knocking noise

Hi Janay, It would not take a good mechanic more than lifting the hood and listening to the engine to determine that the engine had knocked. By all means have someone else have a listen and a look and wait to hear the diagnosis they give. It's always a good idea to have a vehicle serviced on a regular basis. If you needed to add oil, to have the sound of the engine change, It sounds like you didn't bother? If the engine knocks more when you apply gas it seems to me that the connecting rod bearings and the small end bearing have both been damaged by the lack of lubricant (Engine oil). If you like the vehicle replace the engine, if not replace the vehicle. Regards John

1998 over 2002thousand milit has a bad knocking noise the mechanic i took it to said it was a timing chain and that there are two it is a v6 withdual overhead cams how hard would it be or is it even worth...

So hard or difficult both in labor & time
as well as knowledge, that not all pros should be doing it

The chain guides are worn or broken
& the adjusters hung up from dirty oil

Should be 3 chains

2000 jeep grand cherokee and there's a knocking in the engine and we are looking to replace it and wanting to know the cost to replace the engine?

I am assuming you have the 5.2 liter (318 cubic inch) V-8. If the knocking is coming from the oil pan, you may be able to just replace the main and rod bearings on the crankshaft and the oil pump. It is a relatively simple but messy job dropping the pan. I did that job on my old Dodge Dart Sport 318 when it had about 150,000 miles. After I installed the 0.001" under sized bearings, the knocking went away and the oil pressure was back to where it was supposed to be. Make sure the crank surfaces are not damaged or you will be wasting your time. If you end up replacing the engine, the cost will depend on if you get an engine from the junk yard, buy a crate engine, or have the original engine rebuilt, and could run between $1000-3500.

2003 NAVIGATOR #6 CYLINDER COMPRESSION

when you talking about drop #6 cyc, did you mean you had to replace the piston and the rod its self? if you had to replace piston and the rod, what took place that you had to replace them? did you throw a rod or the rod was knocking so you had to replace it. If you replace #6 piston due to a rod knocking or you threw a rod for the second time i wonder if that mechanic inspected the main crankshaft it self. if you threw a rod or it knocking 90% of the time you probably have damaged your crankshaft by scuffing it. scuffing the main crank will not be the same, it can be a hair line scuff, it will take no time before your crackshaft will start wearing out the new rod bearing. scuffing up a crankshaft without having machine shop turn it to smooth out any scuff or damages, it will eat and chew up the new rod bearing like its no tomorrow and your rod will knock again. keep in mind, sometime crankshaft is too damage or scuff to be turn or repair it must be replace. There is no reason if that mechanics done it correctly, you should not have any problems from the same cyclinder; it tells me he did a horrible job although he may got in too deep into the engine and decide to cut cost without fixing it and went ahead and fix it knowingly he should done a proper job. If you have to keep placing the rod and the piston due to the crankshaft wearing out the rod bearing, it tells me you have a bad crankshaft. its not worth replacing and fixing due to the cost factor. you better off to get a used motor from a junk yard for 800-1000 bucks. I hope that help some..

95 jeep wrangler overheating and hissing sound

Had the same problem on my 95 Wrangler within the last month. I was told that the radiators on Wranglers tend to wear out, and don't push fluid through after 10 years or so. I decided to 'fix' everything at the same time. I replaced the radiator, the radiator hoses, and the water pump. That stopped the leaking, and fixed the problem. Water pumps run less than $50, and is actually something you can do yourself. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I needed to save the labor charges from the mechanic, so I took at shot. I had no problems. It does help to have an extra pair of hands to replace the serpentine belt.

1999 wrangler problem: high idle, and hesitant.

If it was originally scanned by auto zone and they said Throttle Position Sensor (TPS),i would go back and have it scanned again, this will tell you for certain what it is.Try and get the code number and definition written down.If it were TPS again, the sensor itself would need to be replaced unless the cost was prohibitive,or the wires to and from the sensor and PCM (vehicle computer),ohms checked for continuity first.Eliminating the wires leaves 2 entities in the circuit, the PCM or the TPS.Checking circuits is costly in labor dollars.Good luck.
