Question about 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The sun roof will not open button has a clicking sound tried wrench but it moves an inch at a time but will not open roof
If the sunroof is out of it's rail this is possible to happen , you have to reset it in position(by bushing it from inside the machine to upside) and then it will work.

I too have had this problem. There is a sound pad made of tar behind the glass and is supposed to be stuck to the underside of the roof. This detaches and falls into the moon roof valley tray and that is what is stopping it from moving back. open roof in the up position and use a slim tool to remove the pad.

It's typically the motors or the special drive tubes that it uses. If you here a clicking noise then the sunroof became to tight and ruined the motor gears. You can actually switch the two motors, one is for the shades and needs less power then the other motor. They are identical, switch them. Nex make sure they are very tight to the 3 mounting bolts, there is a rubber washer bushing that wears out and alloys the motor to flex too much, causing the gear mis-alignment and gear grinding. This works great I do it all the time.

If you just replaced the battery it might need to be recoded and i just did this today by opening and closing it over and over till it started working again....

Unfortunatly these roofs are basically a complete unit with cable and frame all in one unit where as previous roofs had replacable components. Assuming yourr roof seal is not torn or damaged you can adjust the glass somewhat. There are 6 torx style bolts that secure the roof to the tilting brackets. I would raise the roof in the pop up position and carefully remove the side bellows(They are also a common failure and can cause roof to bind or not operate to complete rest postion)-they pop out by pulling outward. Just remove the bottom section so you can easily reinstall them. Next loosen the back torx screws( I beleive they are size t20) and push roof up as far as you can and resecure. If only one side is not popping up as far as it should just do that side. Then try resynchronizing the roof parameters by pushing the button untill roof is in forward postion and hold for approximatly 10 seconds-next push button untill roof is in pop up position and hold for 10 seconds. You can also loosen all 6 screws by popping off the plastic trim piece in front of roof and loosening the screws and pushing roof all the way forward. but you will spend alot of time adjusting utill roof is perfect. good luck
