First of all, was the lock cylinder, the part where your key goes in? Or was it the ignition switch, located on the lower end of your steering column, near your feet? If this is a problem relative to a tilt steering unit, and having to replace a lock cylinder due to a lost key and thus having had to break the lock cylinder out, then yes, you will have to disassemble the column to replace the broken pot metal piece that connects your lock cylinder to your ignition switch on your steering column. These units are tricky and quite difficult to work on, unless you have a lot of patience and a very good mechanical mind or education. Now, if this is merely relative to the replacement of the actual ignition switch located near your feet on the column, then it is much simpler to deal with. Typically the problem that everyone seems to run up against is when they replace the switch, but when they turn the key, the vehicle does not turn over or even try to start. This is just an adjustment of the switch itself. loosen the 2 bolts or nuts slightly so that t is still somewhat tight, and slide the switch in small increments either direction, making certain to tighten them both again after each new slide you make until you are able to start and shut off your vehicle normally. In some cases the long rod running from the lock cylinder to the ignition switch will get bent and not work properly. ?Either et a new onr from a dealership or local wrecking yard. In the first case I addressed concerning the tilt steering column, it is a usually cheaper solution to simply go to your local wrecking yard and purchase another column than it is to have a mechanic repair or rebuild your old one.

SOURCE: 2002 Ford Escape, I can't get

First, Never spray WD 40 in an ignition system, the petroleum based lubricant will allow all foreign objects such as dust and particles to stick together and cause you more problems. Secondly I worked for Ford for years in Service as Manager and in Parts as Manager as well as Parts and Service director. Ford Escapes and Ford Contours are notorious for Ignition problems. Make sure your key chain doesn't have an excess amountof clutter on it such as a lot of keys or added accesories because this adds weight to the system which is already mostly plastic. The best Lubricant to use on a key switch is a dry graphite spray lubricant that you can pick up at most auto parts. If you can't seem to get your key in or out and you need to go now then slow turn the wheel to the left and right while trying your key. The Ford Contours had numerous recalls on their ignition system. I would recommend calling your Ford Dealer and give them your Vehicle Identification number (VIN) and get them to check and see if you have a recall. This is free and the parts and labor are free as well. Hope this helps, Roger Talley, [email protected]

some steering column shifters required the lever to be pulled back to the wheel before the shift could be made (a safety thing). Check for seized bushings or worn bushings that is preventing the movement

2014 Hyundai Tucson-ignition locks up--seems to be connected to the brake hard to depress the brake- key won't turn and steering wheel is locked- a Toyota mechanic who told me its a safety feature

Sounds like a bad ignition lock cylinder or less likely a bad ignition switch, your going to think I'm nuts but call or if possible drive to a locksmith you will save a lot of money when compared to an auto shop... it won't hurt to call and check right? I hope this helps. Take Care

I have a 2002 Saturn sc1 I changed the ignition and it would start and stall ,I was told to put in a relay switch to the ignition now it won't start at all any suggestions

make sure that you have the wires on the back of the switch connected correctly
indicates that you have the run wire to the ignition and the ignition wire for the start wrongly connected or the ignition switch is faulty
the circuit is this
when in start position power to the ignition goes from one wire
when in run position that first circuit is disconnected and a second wire to the ignition is connected

What would make the starter engage when the key out of the ignition

Your problem seems to be a faulty solenoid. The solenoid is a little monster that lives on top of the starter motor, and its job is twofold. Firstly, it supplies full battery power to the starter motor, and secondly it drives a gear on the starter to engage with the engine flywheel.
Now, your problem. The first guess could be the ignition switch, but fitting a toggle seems like a fairy tale answer. Check the starter solenoid to see if there is a frayed wire on the thin wire that connects to the starter, or possibly a frayed wire on the battery cable that is shorting to the small connector. Otherwise, I have seen the terminal of this small wire actually become loose and turn in the direction of the battery cable, which is also connected to the solenoid. A short here will cause the problem you are describing.
Finally, the solenoid could have a short circuit inside the body, which means replace the solenoid.

I can't get the key all the way in to the ignition. It seems like there is something jammed in it.

My husband phoned a mechanic and was told to drill out the ignition with varying sizes of bits until he had made a large enough hole to get to the switch inside. So for now he has to start the car with a long handled screwdriver - but he can get a new ignition to replace it.

Car won't start when security light is blinking

Vehicle anti-theft (VAT) system is not getting proper reading from the ignition switch. Your key has a resistor built into the head of the key (a silver bar on a black backing). Shine up this bar with some fine steel wool on both sides of the key. Possibly the wiring in the steering column that leads to the VAT module has gone bad or the connections in the ignition switch that mate up with the key's resistor no longer connect properly. End result: the starter and fuel injection system remain dead when all else seems normal............Security light on dash will stay on/flashing. There will be a 3 minute dead/reset period between each unsuccessful start attempt.
