Replacing cup holder

I want to take out the retractable cup holder from my volvo s80 2003 model. I have been able to take out the two screws but yet the unit will not come out. What am I missing (i.e., what do I need to do?)

I assume you mean the one that flips up in the center console?

If so, there are three likely issues.

1) did you slide out the retainer from the upper screw? the top screw had a cover that had to be pried off. you then took the screw out. Lastly you have to slide out the plastic retainer that the screw went into. It slides out towards the opening.

2) you have to have the cup holder partially open to remove it. the hinged part that folds up is stored in the cavity under the console when closed. you have to open the cup holder and keep pushing until the front of the cup holder lip comes up. Work the cup holder up and down until it comes out.

3) the cup holder is stuck in place due to years of spilled liquid. If you've done the above, then you can either spray soapy water on the creases around the opening and let it set, or you can apply strategic brute force.
Be aware through. if this is the center console cup holder just behind the gear shifter. There are two screws and nothing else to hold it in. Just be carefull....

Hi Mark - thank you very much for your comments. i did do #1 above. The problem is that the cup holders back piece (that normally hides the cup when retracted) broke off. Therefore the cup holder portion is permanently fixed in the upward position. I can't retract it. As a result I can't do #2 unless I just keep pushing it back and forth. I did try this, though, and it moves but for some reason it will not come out. But since there are only two screws (both of which I removed) I guess I may have to do the brute force method. Besides #3 any other ideas? Am is missing something? thanks again for your very kind input.

At this point i would take a pair of side cutters and try to cut the hinge off enough that you could get the pieces to pull out. I

would take some time and study what is actually moving. I've done a few that were the same way, i just can't remember what i did to get it to move.

Pull the cup holder out, then push it in about 2 inches, then push it DOWN at a 45 degree angle, pull on it and it will come out, then you can get the two screws above the cup holder out.

Replacing cup holder unit on a 1997 toyota 4runner

Despite the other persons advice. on this part you cannot simply yank it out. You must remove the center console (where the stereo is). This is done by removing screws from behind the thin piece of plastic that has your temp controls etc. there may be other screws, but they are easy to find. pull the whole unit forward and then you will have access to the back of the cup holder. there are two "clips" that you can get to. depress them both and the old cup holder will come out. installing the new one may invovled a good shove from the front to engage the new clips. good luck!

An Item Has Fallen Into The Space Behind The Cup Holder? Help.

I recently had to retrieve a small object (camera battery) that was dropped in the cup holder. The battery allowed the cup holder to close properly, but it would not allow the cup holder to open all the way, making the cupholder useless. Getting access to remove the object was quick and easy - all it takes is a small flat blade screw driver. Use the screw driver to gently pry up the wood trim panel in front of the cup holder. Be sure to pull it up evenly from both sides and it will pop out of its retaining sockets. You'll then have the access you need. When you've finished, just realign the wood trim piece and tap it back into place. You can see a picture of where to pry at http://info5000.com/LS400_trim.jpg
