My gas gauge and engine temp dose not read, and also my security, battery and low fuel light flashes constantly. The dealership says that I have to have a new PCM which they say costs 1300$!! Oh and that they cant get into my original PCM because its locked. Do I really need to get a new PCM?

SOURCE: battery died jumped it

It's when the security light starts flashing that the infamous "chip" in the key becomes a nightmare to many. Gradually the car begins not cranking anymore or if it cranks it would start and die in a second. Randomly it will do this more and more often until it won't start anymore. VATS, PASSkey and Passlock immobilizer systems are killing cars all over North America, they have a short lifespan and are certainly more effective against owners than thieves. Here is how you save your car
1st trick, (if not starting) turn the key forward 2 clicks till right before it would normally start, leave like that for 10 minutes. ( no less ) After 10 minutes, turn key back then forward and your car might start. I did this in my regal for more than a year. If its shuting down while running, im sorry i have no quick fix...

Cheap fix: Bypass the chip in your key. Temporary, but effective. Until the TDM (theft deterrent module) in the dash poops out, then you're kinda screwed. I was told that these types of key security systems have a 7-10 year life span. Sucks for us. This link explains the "Key Issue" pretty well.

Never worry again fix: Bypass the whole VATS/Passlock/passkey I or passkey II system entirely. Literally take it out, and throw it away. I just did this in my Regal. Took about an hour. Took longer to find the thing than it did to fix the problem. For a list of cars effected by this problem. See the NEWROCKIES link on the right side of their page......... They sell a unit for 200 bucks to totally bypass this system FOREVER. life time-money back and all that. Finally did this in my car. Well worth the 200 if you've looked into getting this replaced... Anywhere from 600-1000 bucks.

----- With this fix, you can take that whole Vats, passlock, passkey **** system out of your car all together. Good info on both sites

Bat light and low fuel light are on

No , it's not the PCM . Battery light on means a problem with the charging system (alternator) And maybe the insturment cluster . Before you start replacing parts the vehicle doesn't need ,take it to a qualified repair shop .cost less in the long run .

Our 1998 gm safari said check gauge and the engine won't start,We thought it was the gas so I went to the gas station and got gas. I was wondering what does that mean?

check gauges means that the car senses something is not working properly, such as temp gauge reading to hot ,or oil pressure reading to low ,fuel to low, its to get your attention that something is wrong .

79 c10 - guages all read low except gas guage which reasd high. Truck runs fine. Lights work, even the dash lights work good.

It sounds like you might have a poor ground connection somewhere. You can test each individual gauge for full travel by grounding the wire the goes the each gauges individual sender. In other words to check the temp gauge, ground the wire that goes to the temp sender. The temp sender is in the left cylinder head between the #1 and #2 spark plug ( looks like a brass pipe plug with a single wire coming from it) if you ground the wire with the key on (engine off) the gauge should go to the end of the scale (hot) with the wire off it should go to full cold. You can do this with the gas gauge too but not the amp gauge or volt meter. If the volt gauge is reading low (if it has one) and you know that battery voltage is good (don't guess, measure with a multi-meter) there has to be a poor connection somewhere.

None of my guages (gas, speed, temp.) on my dash, work on my 1998 Dodge Caravan. Not a constant problem, just random. The brake light and check engine light are on. Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

Oops. The brake light if on should be investigated first. The fluid level, is it low?

Also, if the check engine light is on, the codes should be read on an OBD-II scanner to get a clue as to what is wrong.

Check the gauge fuse for the gauges going out randomly. The gauge assembly may have a bad connection in the harness though.

Fuel gauge slow to rise and service engine light on

the fuel level sending unit might be shot. mine went out and every time the gauge hit 1/4 tank the needle dropped. its a $80 part, simple to fix yourself if you are out of warranty otherwise they will try to nab i with a $280 bill that includes changing the fuel pump which is not required.

Gas gauge malfunction and engine light stays on

This is a common problem with Malibu's. It is due to cheap metal in the fuel gage that corrodes. Chevrolet knows about this but they refuse to issue a fix. The check engine light staying on and the faulty fuel gage are related. This is a defect and they need to recall this part! Raise hell with the dealership!
