The 4 cylinder engine in your 1996 Saturn SL doesn't use a cam sensor. I know, then how could there be a
code for the cam sensor? Well, The electronic ignition (EI) module
supplies a signal to the PCM whenever it determines that the #4 cylinder
fired on its compression stroke.
You should start by checking to make sure your spark plug wire terminals on the ignition coils are not
corroded. Using a multimeter, check the resistance and
continuity of each ignition wire. If your car is misfiring, replace your spark plug wires and have the code cleared at your local AutoZone or Advance Auto, unless you have a code scanner.
If the code comes back, most likely you have a bad crankshaft position sensor throwing the code. While the engine is running there should be a +5 volts on
the crank sensor everytime the magnetic pickup reads the crankshaft. Using a multimeter you can check the voltage to see if the sensor is functioning properly.
