I recently saw on the news that some models were being recalled for a faulty ignition switch. (Where the key goes.) It happens for no apparent reason and kills the engine and locks the steering wheel. They said only 1 accident has occurred but imagine it happening at 60 miles per hour. You should call and see if your model is one of the bad ones.

SOURCE: 2006 Chevrolet HHR LT Problem

After searching around, I found several posts that suggested reseating all the relays and fuses under the hood. After checking, I noticed nearly all of them were not seated well. I pushed them all down and I haven't had the problem since.

SOURCE: why does 2006 chevy hhr power steering suddenly

There is a known issue with the HHR (and other GM products) Electric Power Steering. GM has recalled some vehicles.

If problem is intermittent then you need to talk to dealer. May need to replace power steering motor.

If all the time, may be blown fuse (#1, 60A underhood) or 2A under dash on passenger side of console.

SOURCE: chevy 2006 hhr power steering pump

The power assist is electric so there is no pump. It is an electric motor near the steering shaft under the hood.

SOURCE: Key stuck in ignition

This is a VERY common problem and there is a campaign though I am not sure it ever made it to full recall. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may want to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.

2006 ION. Why doesn't it crank or start?

It has electric power steering and there is a fault with it. The ECM recognises this and won't left you drive it.

There was a recall on it.

Only 2006-2007 Chevrolet Malibu, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac G6 models built between April and June 2006 are included in this recall. As with the initial recall-which included the Saturn Ion, Saturn Aura, Chevy HHR, and Chevy Cobalt-the electric power steering (EPS) in these vehicles can fail at any time while driving.Feb 17, 2015

Main problems

Engine noise: Growling sounds in the engine compartment when the A/C is running are caused by the high pressure line at the condenser outlet requiring a redesigned line. (2006) Engine stalling: The engine may quit running because the driver inadvertently switches off the ignition with his/her knee, especially if a large, heavy key ring for which the company offers a cover for the ignition key. (2006) Steering noise: A clunk that may also be felt in the steering wheel when turning may be due to insufficient lubrication in the steering intermediate shaft. (2006) Steering problems: Power steering fuses are frequently blown due to improper jump starting when both cable leads are connected to the terminals of the underhood junction block because both terminals are positive.
