1999 plymouth breeze wont into drive shifts thru 1st & 2nd but not drive, just started last night-the fluid looks and smells ok.

check fluid level in trans. if it looks OK get the trans . serviced . new fluid & filter

Could you please smell the transmission fluid sound like the clutches are burnt in the G/Box. If the oil i
has lost its red color and smells funny then you have a serious problem

Hi, have you checked the fluid level and when was the last transmission filter replacement?

You have to get the car up off the ground & properly support it,
and look for the leaks

We can not guess or do that for you over the internet

What kind of oil motor or trans

Check the transaxle drive axle seals or oil pan on trans

fluid has a wierd smell !!!! What color is it ? brown , black ? Burnt smell ? Transmission is burnt . Clutch packs fried .

check fluid level, if ok, might need a rebuild

I've had this happen before. It turned out to be the output sensor on the trans.

I had the same problem in my 1999 plymouth voyager. Changed both speed sensors it started shifting perfectly.. Now i get a little thump when downshifting from 2nd to first when stoping change the sensors there only about 20 dollars each its 2 of them on the front of transmission..

you say the fluid looks good... that's great.
now next time your out drive for about ten good minuetes long enough for the transmission to get nice and warm and then pull over to nice level ground and with the vehicle in park check the fluid again. it's kind of hard to read because it always has a lot of bubbles on it and stuff. but it may be low on fluid.. good-luck ray

Have you tried taking the car in for maintenance? Usually on most (older) auto transmissions there is a hose coming off of the exhaust manifold or carburetor area that provides the pressure for the transmission fluid. If that hose doesn't have a good seal, your shifting may be difficult and the transmission may not stay in the gear you want it to.
