Check your rear emergency brakes. A brake shoe pin could have broke and the shoe locks up in 1 direction. but not the other. The other problem you mentioned could happen, but if it is in reverse the trans shifted.

Reverse lights stopped working on 2005 jeep grand cherokee. bulbs and fuses good. Dealership and aftermarket do not offer a neutral safety/reverse light switch. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

totally untrue but using the wrong name
ask counter man for PRNDL switch, on side of transmission A./T
and tell him which of 2 transmissions used, there,
42RE?
the only line pages at jeep cover this.(parts online) why not look?

the shifter uses a cable , this cable goes under car
this other end goes to the manual lever on side of the trans
this lever has a PRNDL switch on every a/t made (most cars)
but?
when in R, mode, the switch closes and the 12vdc leaves there
to the 2 rear backup lights, and they glow.
sure check fuses, first , for ever and ever. that.
ive posted the GC FSM links now like 100 times. so will skip that

but what trans?
45RFE box.
on some jeeps the switch (sadly) was moved to the solenoid module.
'
called soleniod packaage

http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=640503&ukey_product=8664680

but you need to learn what transmission is there.
42RE
45RFE
or just what first, or you will buy the wrong parts.

does this help. surely the dealer will answer you.
even look up VIN in their database and see
what trans is there, no grease on knuckels at all.
the trans does have a plate on the side that reads.
BLA BLA.. full id and serial.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7L Hemi. It will not engage drive but it shifts into it. When I put it into neutral it's like it's in reverse and when I put it in reverse it goes in reverse....

I would throw it on a scanner. Find out what's wrong. But with no scanner, the first thing I would do is check or replace the transmission range sensor/neutral safety switch. But, you most likely have a transmission swap or rebuild. Everything is electronics now days. You could have a bad solenoid, bad or shorted wire/s or a bad transmission.

How to shift into 4 LO in 2004 jeep grand cherokee

The correct procedure should be described in detail in your owner/operation manual.
For a 2004, 90 % sure that if it's a quadra trac you have to immobilize the vehicule, put your transmission shifter to neutral keeping foot on the brake obviously, engage the low on transfer case pulling the transfer case shifter, engage the transmission to drive
If it's a select track, normally you have to keep the vehicule moving very slowly (2 mph), move the transmission shifter to neutral, push the transfer case shifter to the right and pull it firmly. Once transfer case engaged, put back the transmission shifter to drive.
It could take few seconds to engage and disengage depending on the temperature and road condition. Do not try it on dry surface (preferable on mud, snow and wet surface). Drive at low speed because you will feel that it's very low geared.
By the way, follow the reverse process to reestablish normal mode

Hope it will help

Noisy shifting

I'm wondering if what you are hearing is the driveshaft universal joints. If they are worn they will 'clunk' every time you put the vehicle in gear. Block all wheels to check, put vehicle in neutral, NOT running, crawl under and move the driveshaft back and forth while watching the front then rear u-joint. It should be obvious if there is 'slop' or 'play' in them, which would indicate they need to be replaced.

1997 grand cherokee limited 4x4 v8

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.

Transmission -1997 Grand Cherokee laredo 4x4

Sounds like the lockup torque converter has failed. Repair requires trans removal and possible rebuild if converter has contaminated unit. Have a trans shop verify!!
