When you say rocky spot, what do you mean? If you mean there were rocks in the roadway, you could have put a small hole in the transmission pan which leaked all the fluid out of it. First thing I would do is check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick and look for leaks on the ground under the car.
98 sidekick.
in the USA we have the 4speed, A/T called. 03-72LE
do post what id does and not do. (full picture)
what wont shift?, the shifter or transmission or both?
won't go to park is clear. but;
1: are you on flat ground or on a hill parking to a curb.
vastly different rules there.
2: wont go into park so where does it go? everywhere buy park?
or flops around , like a loose Popsicle stick?
on flat ground the parking pawl in the tranny goes in easy.
on hills not so.. set the hand brake first, then park last.
on last, off first. (or trouble brews)
or it may not ever get to park. if rammed against curb or rock, or?
have friend bump car just a little to move it apply break put on parking break start vehicle press brake take out of gear let off emergency brake you park on hill so this is called shift lock always use the emergency parking break when on hill so you dont get shift lock
It does have a towing package right? A button on the end of the gearshift that you push in when towing? It sounds like it is in too high of gear. Maybe trans fluid gets hot and turns on the light? If it dont have the towing package? Are you keeping it in overdrive? Shift it down manually and keep it in 3rd when hauling any kind of weight. Not sure if this helps but I know peopl that have burnt their transmission out pulling trailers in O/D
sounds like the clutch has corroded somewhat.
does it feel like the clutch has some pressure?
try putting it in gear, depress the clutch, and then see if it will start in gear( be carefull it may jump forward)
this might free the clutch.
also the clutch fluid may have drained or have an air bubble, depressing the clutch many times quickly may self bleed the air out, or bleed some new fluid through it. make sure to top up the fluid.
it sounds like you have a vaccum leak more than likely. check near the intake manifold near the fire wall there are several vaccum lines there. also remove the the breather hose and check that your throttle plate is not sticking(this of course only applies if you have fuel injection. if you have a tbi or it's carburated check the throttle linkage to see if it's perhaps sticking
