The car usually runs ok when cold. after about 30 min driving, it will stall with battery light and "check engine" light on. When I put it in park and then re-start, it will run again. It will stall when putting it into drive or reverse unless I press the brake and give gas (about 2000 rpm). then it will run until I have to stop then the same problem again.

put a OBD II code reader on it see if it has stored any codes if not replace the TPS sensor and the MAF sensor do the replacements at different times so you don't buy one or the other for nothing
SOURCE: car keeps stalling when brakes applied, then starts but turns off
I dont know why, but one time my truck was low on trans fluid and after I topped it off, it didnt stall anymore when put into gear. as fro the odometer i dont know, it may have to go out completely before any diagnosis can be done.
Testimonial: "I will do that, but the other day we realized it only does it when one of us changes the steering wheel position...somehow the wires may be pinching?"

Sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control valve/sensor) that controls your idle when going from throttle to idle. If bad your idle will act crazy and can cause stalls easily. Pretty sure that's it.
