We have a 1998 Ford Winstar that has been a nightmare. 2 weeks ago my fuel gauge stopped working. Then I ran out of gas but after putting the gas in, it still would not start. Then the next day it did start...after we had it towed. We replaced the fuel filter and all seemed okay. Then the sputtering returned..as if it were coughing. Yesterday, the whole electrical seemed to go crazy and now I am overheating. I cannot make it down the road. The van starts most of the time, and then shortly after it dies. Fuel relay switch is not elevated and the fuel filter is brand new. Could it be that the fuel pump is going bad? Or clogs in the line? We had noticed some dirt in the line when replacing the filter. Any advice will help

Have you checked fuel pressure with a gauge ? Is it possible you got a tank of bad gas ? Have you tried running the car with the gas cap off to check for venting problems ?
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 98 FORD WINDSTAR, A 2001 ENGINE WAS INSTALLED ON IT AND ALWAYS VIBRATES, IF SOMEBODY KNOWS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, PLEASE POST SOLUTION
change the fuel filter for one, this is telling you that your pick up in the tank is getting clogged, I would drop my tank, and drain it, flush it, and check the pump at that time
More than likely you have a fuel pump issue. The fuel in the tank not only powers the engine but it also helps keep the fuel pump cool. running it low/out of fuel could cause the pump to overheat but it is possible that your fuel pump was already weak. An easy way to check it is to turn the key on and check the schrader valve on the fuel rail by pushing it in with a small screwdriver,if nothing squirts out you dont ha(red button popped out on top)ve any fuel pressure. The next step would be to check the inertia switch, make sure it isnt tripped. If it isnt check power on both wires of the switch with it plugged in. It should have power for about 1 second on both wires after keyed on,if so,I would suspect the fuel pump
The windows motor has died, the slider has a loose lock/unlock lever, usually held in place by a small plastic clip. The gas guage has a loose connection, or a bad sending unit. The sending unit is in the gas tank. You can probably fix both doors yourself, but the gauge will most likely require the tank to be removed. I would figure a few hundred to fix it.
You are going to have to replace the fuel guage sending unit in the fuel tank, nothing else will cause this problem that this 20 year Ford dealer tech has seen.
