Bypass ac compressor with shorter serpentine belt 2001-02 Mercury Sable LS

I need to bypass the clutch on the ac compressor, my pulleys all have the clearance to do so, and I know it will work with the proper size belt. Napa has various sizes of belts and I am only about an inch away with a 68inch 6 groove belt. I am wondering if bypassing this way would cause any harm to the engine? The clearance is available and I know for a fact this car has several engines made the same year so this wont work for everyone but it just so happens to have clearance in this engine 2001-9 months, engine is EFI NON DOHC. To all the nay sayers about bypassing ac compressors with a shorter belt: Sometimes we are financially unable to fix things properly until we save enough to do so. I am looking to use the shorter belt until 2 months from now when I can replace the compressor properly. Why does it seem on every answer board people have a negative connotation towards those who seek to bypass the ac compressor with a shorter belt?

Because in most cases the routing will not work without the pulley for the compressor being in use. That's why some engines have a dummy pulley available to use in place of the compressor.
Not using the compressor pulley can cause the belt to drive a pulley the wrong direction, or not have the grooved side of the belt on a pulley.

SOURCE: !991 Olds 88...can I replace with a shorter serpentine belt?

Unplug wires going to the compressor, and let it freewheel, if it's not noisy in that mode. A/C compressor won't kick in if not connected. A lot less hassle than going the other way.

I doubt anyone knows that off the top of their head. You could run a string through the path you want the belt to take and measure how much string it takes. This will give you an approximate length for the belt -- most parts stores could find one close to that size.

Dont do it. Get it fixed. Engine components are there for a reason. Unless you dont like your car. Do it properly.

Talk to your automotive supply. My understanding is that a Non-AC belt will run right thru the area where the AC pulley is. You can get a bypass pulley that will allow you to avoid the AC and it's pulley and a specific belt for that setup.

2005 Dodge Durango 4.7 magnum bypass serpentine belt

the ac is an idler pulley in the system so leaving it out will require a total change of how the belt is fitted and not just needing a shorter belt
remember that the ac pulley bearing can be replaced if faulty and if the ac compressor has failed disconnect the ac clutch wire and there is no need to worry about belts

Can the serpentine belt by-pass the a/c pump? 2002 mercury sable?

On most applications, no.
Herein lies the problem.
If you bypass the A/C compressor, you will find the belt too long for the application, and it cannot be shortened.
Whenever the car-maker builds the car, they will order the exact belt for the length the belt must be, with only a tiny fraction of an inch to spare.
That means no part can be added or subtracted for that belt to fit.
I have had several occasions to need a shorter belt to bypass the A/C compressor, and have found a way to do so, that would be to take a string or a thin tape measure and find the length that will work just with the remaining pulleys.
You may very well find that will not work either, because the engine pulleys or engine parts may get in the way of a shorter belt!
Too see what I mean, take the serpentine belt off, and try a string around the remaining pulleys, remembering to have the string exactly where it must go.
Also, most parts stores will not want to give you belts to "play with" to try to find the right one.
However, some stores will sell you a belt by size, not application.
God bless your efforts.

What size belt do I need to bypass Mercury Sable AC Compressor

I had to do the same thing on my Toyota Avalon. I used a flexible cloth measuring tape to measure around the pulleys (minus the A/C, of course). I had to cut the pulley off the Avalon A/C compressor because of interference issues. You may or may not have to do the same.
