The pistons are hitting the valves due to wrong alignment of timing gears and the timing belt. Align the timing gears and timing belt marks according to the following diagrams.
Good luck.
Start again . Remove the cover and the timing belt. Remove the cam shaft so that there is no valve movement and all the valves are closed . Turn the crank to position the timing belt. fit the cam ensuring that the timing mark for the pulley is lining up with the mark in the head. Fit the pump pulley . Fit the belt and you will notice that the pump pulley is off the mark. It is necessary to turn the pump slightly to ensure that when the belt is tensioned that the pump park is on the position . It is only slight ( about 2 belt teeth ) . allow the tensioner to activate and check all timing marks are spot on . To get a more detailed explanation use a workshop manual as it is very good with diagrams and tensions and position of marks.. If the engine runs bad then you may have to have any bent valves replaced.

the front drive gear is on with a slight press fit, you will need to use a 2 or 3 jaw puller to pull the front gear from the injection pump, it does not take much to pop it lose. then you will be able to remove the pump.....good luck
