The pistons are hitting the valves due to wrong alignment of timing gears and the timing belt. Align the timing gears and timing belt marks according to the following diagrams.

Start again . Remove the cover and the timing belt. Remove the cam shaft so that there is no valve movement and all the valves are closed . Turn the crank to position the timing belt. fit the cam ensuring that the timing mark for the pulley is lining up with the mark in the head. Fit the pump pulley . Fit the belt and you will notice that the pump pulley is off the mark. It is necessary to turn the pump slightly to ensure that when the belt is tensioned that the pump park is on the position . It is only slight ( about 2 belt teeth ) . allow the tensioner to activate and check all timing marks are spot on . To get a more detailed explanation use a workshop manual as it is very good with diagrams and tensions and position of marks.. If the engine runs bad then you may have to have any bent valves replaced.

SOURCE: Toyota landcruiser HZJ80 1993 1HZ

the front drive gear is on with a slight press fit, you will need to use a 2 or 3 jaw puller to pull the front gear from the injection pump, it does not take much to pop it lose. then you will be able to remove the pump.....good luck

Why is my Toyota Landcruiser 1HZ motore missing and blowing white smoke?

Air leak in the fuel line? All the lines are pressurised to some degree.
Do you mean it was sucking air on the tank to pump side?
Because its a diesel and you have white smoke and a misfire you need specialist help to identify which injector is playing up. White smoke is usually excess fuel or incomplete firing on that cylinder. Toyota lumps are very reliable so get some help, a good diesel mechanic would have a clip on tester that would check each cylinder.
At 2002 I'm surprised there is a fuel problem but you don't give mileage so an injector is the best guess.

Kubota M 5030 2.8 6 cyl. Diesel in oil sump. Why?

Diesel gets in the sump from an seal leaking in the fuel pump through to the drive gear and out into the sump. If it has an inline pump( one where the injector lines are in a row at the top of the pump) the fuel will be leaking past the plunger elements and into the pump sump which then drains back tot he engine sump. IF it is slight but consistent sometimes injectors will dribble when shut down and the fuel will by pass the piston rings into the sump. Talk with a diesel pump and injector repair specialist for any faults particular to the Kubota fuel system

better chec the wiring or connections 1st--pull the plug from the pump and inspect for flaws and corrosion then plug back in--pump itself can be tested--the fuel injection pump in engine area may have issues

Do the timing belt cover on a 1996 camry have a seal or gasket that can leak oil, mine seems to be leaking for around that area. If so how to replace the seal/gasket?

The timing cover itself does not seal any oil from leaking. It is just a cover to prevent debris from getting into the timing belt and ruining it.

To find the oil leak you will need to remove the timing cover and inspect the seals behind the cam gear, crank gear, and oil pump drive gear, and the oil pump to block seal. The most common leaks on these are the cam gear.

The car's peformance has been poor, especially on picking from a stationary position (no power).

I would suggest to have the pump timing reset and probably have a diesel specialist to check the pump as well. It is very difficult to give extra help over the net as most of the things have been covered by the mechanic I supposed. But as per your description I think the pump may have not been timed properly or it may need overhauling as well.

I dont know where the oil pump is on my 89 toyota

On a 22RE the oil pump is on the timing cover behind the crank pulley/harmonic balancer,it has the crank timing pointer built onto it,generally they don't leak around the pump seal but as Monster80 pointed out they leak from the front main seal wich is installed on the front of the oil pump, pretty common for the 22R/RE to leak around the timing cover gaskets or out the bolt holes on the timing cover also, usually due to uneven tourqe on the bolts,to check the front main seal you need to look at the the crank from the underside right after you've shut the motor down,if the seals bad you'll see oil starting to form a drop on the backside of the pulley or the front of the oil pump housing.
