I have a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle. I've only been having this problem off, and on. It's worse when it's cold, or when I'm low on gas. I try and not let it get below a 1/4 tank. The problem that I am sometimes having is this. It starts up normal, and then stalls almost instantly. If I give it gas it will run for a few seconds and stall. If I continually give it gas it will stay running, but it wants to stall. So I start it up, and I drive it around the block a couple times, at first it will stall if I brake, and then it starts up and stays running, but it idles really rough, the whole car shakes. Then after I drive it a couple minutes it runs completely normal. No stalling or rough idling. I've been told it could be a few different things. I'm replacing my fuel filter, and getting my injectors cleaned tomorrow to start off. Im wondering if anyone has had this problem or seen this, and could give me a more specific cause. Thanks for your help!
If it stalls when the brake lights come on then the idle is too slow. The high amps of the lights will load down the engine and lowers the idle.
Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.
Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 98 ford escortLX starts and runs for about 1 min and then stalls
check fuel pressure regulator.+ vacuum lines going to it look see if gas in vacuum line.if so regulator rupture.

My 2002 Lesabre (app 115000 miles) started something like this. Also the loose gas cap had been coming on for quite a while. I replaced the vacuum line from the air intake to the fuel sensor. It is under the engine cover (twist off the oil filler to remove the cover). There are two hoses together that come of the air intake. The small one goes to the top of the engine. The other goes across the front and makes a 180 turn back to the sensor. Chances are the 180 piece is cracked. It all comes from the dealer as one unit. $25
Seems to have fixed my problems. So if your car is running a little rough. Shutters under load. If the gas cap loose is coming on or probably a number of symptoms this might be the answer. I would replace this item. A cheap try.

I also changed the maf recently, and there are no warning lights on. When I plugged it in, I got a code for running lean.
