Stalls after start up, Stalls when braking, then runs fine after a few minutes

I have a 2001 Volkswagen Beetle. I've only been having this problem off, and on. It's worse when it's cold, or when I'm low on gas. I try and not let it get below a 1/4 tank. The problem that I am sometimes having is this. It starts up normal, and then stalls almost instantly. If I give it gas it will run for a few seconds and stall. If I continually give it gas it will stay running, but it wants to stall. So I start it up, and I drive it around the block a couple times, at first it will stall if I brake, and then it starts up and stays running, but it idles really rough, the whole car shakes. Then after I drive it a couple minutes it runs completely normal. No stalling or rough idling. I've been told it could be a few different things. I'm replacing my fuel filter, and getting my injectors cleaned tomorrow to start off. Im wondering if anyone has had this problem or seen this, and could give me a more specific cause. Thanks for your help!

I also changed the maf recently, and there are no warning lights on. When I plugged it in, I got a code for running lean.

If it stalls when the brake lights come on then the idle is too slow. The high amps of the lights will load down the engine and lowers the idle.

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

SOURCE: 2000 LeSabre starts but runs very rough and stalls. After

My 2002 Lesabre (app 115000 miles) started something like this. Also the loose gas cap had been coming on for quite a while. I replaced the vacuum line from the air intake to the fuel sensor. It is under the engine cover (twist off the oil filler to remove the cover). There are two hoses together that come of the air intake. The small one goes to the top of the engine. The other goes across the front and makes a 180 turn back to the sensor. Chances are the 180 piece is cracked. It all comes from the dealer as one unit. $25
Seems to have fixed my problems. So if your car is running a little rough. Shutters under load. If the gas cap loose is coming on or probably a number of symptoms this might be the answer. I would replace this item. A cheap try.

When I start my 2001 volkwagen beetle (5 speed) it shakes and the check engine light flashes at me. Then when I shift into first to move forward, it acts like it doesn't want to go, feels like its

possibly an O2 sensor or a fuel pump/filter going bad/clogged. It sounds like a fuel issue. does the car have abs brakes and an abs dash light that turns on with the other lights when you turn the car to on before starting? dragging brakes is not fun and i have seen abs sensors go bad and lock up on people including myself.

My 2001 beetle is over heating and abs light is on

first is there anti freeze in the radiator. How hot did it get? you can have a stuck thermostat or a bad water pump, and or a hole in one of the coolant hose. check and see if the radiator is full,if it is not add water, and start the car,and wait. about 5 minutes see if the upper radiator is soft when squeezed if it is then thermostat is ok ,but if it is hard to squeeze you have a stuck thermostat. if the that is ok . you may have a bad water pump or even a radiator fan not working

My 2000 beetle won't come out of park when the engine is on

Sometimes the steering wheel has a lock mode when the car is off, and then gets stuck there. Try wiggling the wheel after you start the car.

My 2001 Beetle 1.8l turbo was driving fine and now it stalls out of nowhere. When the Mass airflow sensor was disconnected the car would run fine, So I replaced it thinking that was the faulty part. Now...

i would start by having engine idle in park and pop open the fuse box and move the relays to see if it stalls, many mechanics use a test light to find electrical issues and probe to hard therefore opening the electrical contacts thus causing intermittent point of contacts on relays fuses etc. hope this helps you .if not call me again with further info.

2000 vw check engine light on, oil fine

Ignor it, or if it really annoys you disconnect the battery for a few minutes and it will reset. My 2001 check engine light is on every time it rains(often) many times it resets on it's own within a few days. My guy is a mechanic and it runs fine, so its usually just a cranky bug. Or you can buy a code reader at pep boys or an auto store and it will tell you the codes associated with the light.
