Cam belts just wanted to know if the ford focus 1.8 tdci has cam belts or chain as our 2004 focus is at the mileage where a cam belt would need to be changed.

    Hi

CAR - FORD FOCUS, LX, TDCI, 1753cc – DIESEL, MANUAL, 5 DOOR HATCHBACK (29/09/2003).

Problem – went to start the car from cold and noticed white smoke coming from under the bonnet. On investigation the smoke was coming from looked like a joint, in a small drum shape case, in-between the drive / timing belt and the alternator.

Is this an easily replaceable part and what could have been the cause ?

    Thank you

    Nick

Ford tdci 2.4 diesel engine as fitted to 1994 LTI TX2 taxi. Constantly replacing timing chain and tensioner. Five replacement chains and tensioners in 140,000 miles. Engine is serviced every 6000 miles....

cant help the only ford 2.4 engine diesel i know of is the york engine and that has a timing belt not a chain.Sounds like you could be a bit fastidious because all timing chains show wear on the tensioner, causing a bit of a rattle but unlike a belt it will not break just get a bit noisey, answer to that is to turn the radio up a bit

I have a 2004 2.0 Litre TDCI Ford Focus which as done 75000 miles. As far as I know the timing belt has never been changed, when should I change it.

check manual, if you don't have one buy a good one if you plan on doing it yourself,  but it's probably time

Engine starts but does not rev up

Double check the timing marks on the crankshaft and cam pullies. I bet your off by a tooth after replacing the timing belt.

When do i need to change my ford focus 18 tdci cam belt

It should be in your owners manual service intervals information,or i go by the 60k miles rule. Some cars now utilize a timing chain and gears like the Mazda 3,so it would be a good idea to call your local Ford dealer, and talk to the service department,as they can tell you the specifics as to whether your engine carries a belt or chain, and the service interval for timing belts.Timing chains generally don't wear out until around the 100k mark, but belts should be serviced at 60k miles as a general rule.
