Gas guage problem

Trying to figure out whats wrong with the gas guage on my 1992 Ford Ranger. When you start the truck the gas hand goes all the way up past the full mark and then slowly comes back down. It usually takes about 20 minutes for the hand to come back down. I've been told to just unplug the sending unit and plug it back in, bad ground, the gauge has gone bad, etc. Just looking for someone with knowledge of the Ford Rangers or someone who has had this problem and knows what it is to let me know. Thank you.

Most likely the sending unit is bad in the fuel tank. The easiest way to get to it is to remove the bed. Taking the tank off is quite a chore. You can unplug the tail light harness and the license plate lights& take the 6 bolts out of the bed and 2 good men can lift the bed off. The fuel tank will be in full view. Take the sending unit out of the tank by unhooking the fuel lines, wiring plug and turn the lock ring counter clockwise and lift the fuel pump and sending unit out of the tank and replace it. Reinstall it and check to see if it is working before you put the bed back on. I hope this is helpful.

SOURCE: 1966 Ford Mustang Gas Guage not working

I had a similar problem. In my 1966 Mustang gas tank, the fuel pick-up was on a "float." My float developed a hole, filled with gasoline, and sank to the bottom of the tank, therefore, the gauge always read empty, but the car ran well. All the other gauges of course worked correctly. The repair was a relatively simple soldering job (after removing the float from the tank), but if that is indeed the problem, ensure all the gasoline is drained from the float before beginning the soldering job.

that is not an isolated problem just with fords but all the info that you listed is a great place to start, and as well the sending unit may be bad, so start trying some of the easer things to start.

I have a 1992 ford ranger 4.0 liter 4x4 I drive for about 5 miles and the truck shuts off like its out of gas I wait 10 2 15 minutes and it strts up again what's wrong

Someone will need to figure out if you are loosing spark to the plugs or fuel pressure to the injectors when it dies.
Could be a relay such as the EEC relay or fuel pump relay, the ignition module or coil, or a list of other things.

1992 Ford Ranger with the 4.0. Extra high idle at cold start-up followed by almost stall extra low idle. Then it chugs for the first 50 ft. Gets better as it warms up.

Clean the idle air control valve or replace it and check the readings on your engine coolant temp sensor. Wrong temp reading really screw up the air / fuel mixtures

1992 Ford Ranger XLT V6 wont start without ether

first go to an auto partstore and have the code checked. most do it for free. could be coil, fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter or even a bad gas cap. but the dianogstic test should pin point the problem.

Gas gauge is wrong

It is likely that its the sending unit in the tank. One way to determine if its the guage or the sending unit is to ground the wire from the guage and it should peg out. If it doesnt then its the guage if it does then its the sending unit.

Fuel guage goes to empty when i start my truck. when truck is off it will show 1/4 tank. 1996 ford ranger 4x2 11340 miles. very low miles for this truck didn't know if it may of had a recall when it was...

if it has a recall then call ford up and give them the vin. They have to tell you if there is a recall on it by law. It sounds like you have a bad wire, some where. you need to get under the truck and start testing all the wires from the gas tank sending unit.

good luck..

1992 ford ranger 3.0

i was once pulling a trailer with a ranger when it suddenly lost power and the engine died. turns out the problem was with the fuel shut off inertia switch. the switch is supposed to activate in case of accident. on my model the inertia switch is located in the passenger side under the glove box. dont know where yours is located. once you find it, just push the button and see if it resets. good luck.
