The reason is they are pressed in and you have to press them out with a tool and some have a C clip that has to be removed you can go to schucks or autozone to rent the tool to press out and it has to be pressed back in.

all vehicles are similar. remove wheel, remove axle nut, remove tie rod ,remove lower ball joint ,pull spindal and rotor back pushing axle thru at same time, use pry bar to pop axle from tranny, reversal to install, push axle into tranny, pull spindal/rotor back install axle end into hole reset lower ball joint ,tie rod end. then most important TORQUE AXLE NUT TO PROPER SPECS if you dont you will ruin the wheel bearing. not fun to do in the driveway and sometimes all these parts are a real pain to remove even on a hoist with the proper tools so beware and for the love of life dont hammer on the end of the axle
I think you want to remove the upper ball joint???? If this is the case it is not easy. You cant remove the upper with out removing the lower at the same time. On the upper there is a camber adjustment sleeve. The sleeve is removed gently from the top. But the upper ball joint needs to be loosened first. The service details are a bit different from 4x4 or just rwd. We will need more info on what it is you are trying to fix or replace. The upper "camber" sleeve is a real pain to get out with out removing both the up and lower ball joint studs. I hope this is some what usefull. No matter what take your time and post more info. Be specific on what you need to do................. Dan...........
Suggest you have a professional do this one. If everything is not put together correctly, you can lose control of the vehicle and hurt yourself or others.
It's definitely easier to replace the control arms with the ball joints. I think you may have to buy new upper control arms anyway if they are oe i don't think the upper ones can be pressed out. If you are going to press the ball joints out you do not need to remove the springs or struts. Brake caliper/rotor/hub and knuckle are removed leaving the upper and lower control arms. i would disconnect the abs connector too if it has abs. recommend supporting the vehicle on the frame somewhere. You can buy a ball joint press kit for about 80$ online or use a really big hammer to smack them out. Putting them back in may be a pain without a press.
