Speedometer cable Speedometer isn't working is it just a cable

there isn"t one persay!you have a impuse sensor on the transmission that sends a electric signal to your speedometer

first (of older cars) check that the speedometer cables spins when
you spin the rear axle.(and prop shaft)
post year, for best answer.

The speed sensor would be a likely suspect.
It takes the place of the speedo cable going from the transmission to the speedometer.

Check the speed sensor on the gearbox casing and any wires. Check the nylon gear on the end of the sensor by pulling the sensor out and inspecting.
If it's a cable type speedo drive, then pull out the cable and check that it isn't snapped.

most cases it is the speed sensor and not the speedometer, it usually turns on the check engine light when it fails.

Hi, You have NO Cable to operate your Speedometer. it is all electronic ( and i do not mean digital ! ) The Speed Sensor could not be at fault for this type of Problem either!


I have seen this Many Many times in Ford , Lincoln , Etc vehicles. They even will warranty the cluster thru the dealership!!

The Problem lies in the Speedometer Cluster. These Clusters made after 2000 have stepper motoros to drive all the gauges. The Tachometer and Speedometer are the Most prone to failure as they are used the most!

It is best to have the Instrument cluster Removed and Repaired or Replaced. A junkyard Replacement is ok but make sure you get a guarantee.

I pull at least one cluster a week and repair them for this same sort of problem!
