stalls. but does is restart, stalls hot and cold engine? all the time? or just some times, what? ever do a 60k mile tuneup this decade? does fast right foot save the stall???????? key question ! lost 12vdc power to EFI. if random stalls its not lost compression bad spark (tuneup time?) lost spark , kills all gas engines. bad fueling. too much or too little. if all above is good, then the ISC is stuck closed. lean it.

my guess , no EFI system,type known is,,,, EGR sticking open, or bad spark plugs/wire,cap and rotor (tuneup parts) or the ISC is sticking closed, this is the idle controller, if you can save the stall easy, (was it easy) ask your self why the ISC cant do that, as that is ITS #1 job. my answer is on GAS ENIGNE , no diesel. so....

what engine, what fueling system. Carb. or EFI?
2.5 L AMC 150 I4 Complete engine specs[show] 4.0 L AMC 242 I6 Complete engine specs[4][show] 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 Complete engine specs some 87s have a carb. does yours, (nobody can fix enigine not kwowing both facts above and what transmission,.

stalls , moving, only. at stop lights or between gears.
but never just parked idling.
if its random , that would be the EGR valve sticking open.
if EFI , bad idle switch.
if Carb bad dash pot. on carb.

My 1987 Ford Escort Wagon 1.9 L EFI starts up great then shuts down when going to idle.

Could be a faulty idle air control valve, or dirty throttle body.

Truck starts runs for a second shuts off .

The fuelpump is primed by the oil pressure switch.When the fuel pressure reaches normal PSI the computer shuts that pressure switch off and turns thepoweron to the fuelpump relay.You have a bad fuel pump relay
