I had my service engine light checked at a local autozone because my 99 Montero Sport XLS (2 wheel drive) is jerking very rough into reverse and sometimes into drive, mostly when the vehicle is not warm (just starting up). The error code came up as a "transmission fluid temperature sensor circuit malfunction." They suggested I change the transmission fluid temp sensor. Does this sound like it will fix the problem described? And about how much should it cost, is it a labor intensive fix?
Hi Sc, The job is labour intensive and may solve the problem. I wonder if the fluid in the tranny has ever been replaced? It's meant to be replaced at least once a year. If it smells burned have it replaced. Ask your shop to check the gearbox and engine mountings and in the event of your vehicle having rear wheel drive, the universal joints on the prop shaft. Regards John

The computer wants to know if the transmission is working properly. So it reads the speed of the input shaft and compares it to the speed of the output shaft. It knows which gear you're in because it commanded the transmission to shift into that gear. The turbine speed refers to the torque converter. That's the device that transfers power from the engine to the transmission. Think of two fans facing each other. Turn on one fan and the blades on the other fan will spin. The fan that ISN'T turned on is the turbine. So, with the input shaft or turbine speed, the gear selection, and the output speed, the computer can calculate how efficiently the transmission is working. If the speed is off, it knows that something is slipping inside the transmission. It can then try to boost the fluid pressure to compensate. If that doesn't work, it sets a different trouble code, usually a P0716 code means that the computer has detected a value for the input sensor that's either out of range (way too high or too low), or there's a circuit issue (bad wiring, etc. Should probably get it to a repair shop ASAP before damage is done.

I have a 2004 that did not pass the state of Illinois emission test.
The code came back 0711. The check engine light comes on
occassionally but will go out and won't come back on for weeks at a time. Does anyone have a clue?

The speed sensor would be located on the side of the
transmission.Pretty easy to replace,dependant on it's
location. As far as price,I have no idea. good luck.
Testimonial: "thanks for the help. They said it could be on one of the front wheels too. "

I definetly highly reccomend you to use Mitsubishi genuine Diamond SPIII Fluid, you'll feel your transmission more powerfull, and will help you to keep it just like new. I've tried with "Import multivehicle" from Castrol but a within 6 months the gears began to slip.

@John Gee---The transmission fluid has been changed within the last year. But I will have the shop check all that you mentioned. The vehicle is rear wheel drive. Also, there are 186k miles on the transmission.
And I checked the transmission fluid level yesterday and it was fine.
