How to line distributor shaft when replacing ignition control module on a 1991 ford f150 v8 truck

Set the engine to the number one compression, and bring the timing mark to zero on the harmonic balancer.(or just bring the timing on the harmonic to zero). mark to match the plug wires to cap, remove the cap.(if you can remove the cap without removing plug wire) mark the rotor position to the engine using a scribe, mark the rotor to the distributor, mark the distributor to the engine using a scribe,Take the lock down bolt out and pull out distributor. when you reinstall line up all your marking and check timing.

1991 hyundai scoupe; engine cranks but does not start, check engine light came on then off about three times before this occurred. Car has fuel, checked injectors, fuel pump, plugs, rotar. think it might...

You stated the 'CHECK ENGINE' light came 'ON'!... what/which DTC'S (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) OBDI were retrieved? In 1991, OBDI (1) was used. You could retrieve codes by either turning the ignition switch on/off two or three time within 3 seconds and the light would flash for each number (this way you could determine which system was affected). The POSSIBLE CAUSES are many:

Crank Position Sensor
Ignition Coils/Wires
Water/contaminated fuel
Electrical (Relay(s), fuse(s), Poor ground connections, failed ECU (Engine Control Unit), etc.

Are you getting a SPARK to the plugs?... if so, check fuel pump pressure
If you're not getting a spark to the plugs or not getting a fuel injector PULSE, then the crank position sensor MIGHT BE the problem.... NOT SURE!

Too many POSSIBLE or PROBABLE causes.

In order for an engine to RUN, it needs these things:

1. Air flow (intake AND exhaust)
2. Fuel (proper fuel to air mixture)
3. Compression (140 to 2?? psi)
4. Proper Timing (not too advanced/retarded)
5. Ignition (sufficient and at the correct/right time)

Now, after listing these 5 things, without CHECKING each one, your guess is a good as mine.

Need to know what the degree the timing should be for a4.9 Cadillac Engine ?

The 1991 Cadillac DeVille 4.9 engine incorporates a magnetic timing probe hole for use with special electronictiming equipment. Malfunction codes may be set during ignition timing adjustment procedure.Enter diagnostics and clear trouble codes if this occurs.#1 Place transmission in park .#2 With the ignition in the Off position attach a timing light to #1 spark plug cable .#3 With engine at normal operating temperature and air conditioning OFF,take off the air cleaner upper housing. The engine should be OFF at this point.#4 Jump pins A and B at the ( ALDL) connector.while not in diagnostic display.SET TIMING MODE message will apear on the climate control Driver Information center.#5 Start the engine and aim the timing light the timing mark loosen the distributor hold-down nut. While observing the timing mark, rotate distributor untill the line indicates the correct timing .This sets the base timing at 10 degrees BTDC at any speed under 800 RPM in the (PCM) The PCM controles the timing throughout the intire engine RPM range. This is the best imformation I can offer you good luck.

No fire to coil replace coal and tested ignition

Try checking the timing belt. They will cause this issue if they are even slightly streched or worn .... because theys slkip and make engine jump time. you can replace it and should solve the problem after you get it back in time.

Ignition timing for 1991 Pontiac Firefly or 1991 Chevrolet Sprint or 1991 Geo Metro

for 1991 geo metro 1.0 liter 3 cyl engine the timing is 6 degrees before top dead center. you will need a tachometer because the rpm must be 800 when you set the timing. also you will need to disconnect the vacuum advance to the distributor, and plug the hose to avoid a vacuum leak. (alternate method is to pinch the vacuum advance hose going to the distributor while you are setting the timing) Good Luck!
