Injectors will spray during crank, check for "no spark"

Testimonial: "If I unplug the fuel pump it shuts the gas off and it will fire up and run a short time"

  • George Zafiris Feb 22, 2014

Plug in the fuel pump and turn the key on, no crank, you'll get an intial start up spray, and stop,. does it do that or does it keep duping fuel with just the key on, no crank?

SOURCE: '88 chevy truck, no spray from injectors

Not sure on that model what controls the injector pulse, but most vehicles either use the signal from the crankshaft position sensor or a cam position sensor. You should use a LED testlight, (NOT A BULB TESTLIGHT!!) and backprobe the injector terminals (with the other lead of the testlight to ground) while cranking the engine over. If the light flashes on one of the terminals, then you are getting injector pulse, and the fault lies elsewhere. If not, then you will need to replace whatver sensor is used to provide engine position signal on that model. Also, check the wiring to that sensor. Some vehicles have problems with the crankshaft pulley harmonic balancer failing and damaging either the body of the crank position sensor or its wiring.

SOURCE: i have 1990 chevy pickup 1500 4 wheel 350 eng.

It sounds like the engine is pulling fuel from the tank, and not replacing it with air, causing a vacuum to build in the tank. The vacuum, may build to the point that it resists the fuel pump's efforts to **** fuel from it. If the vacuum is sufficient, it may collapse the tank, or expand the fuel enough for the engine manifold vacuum to **** raw gas into the evaporative emissions control system, hence the cannister.

Replacing the fuel pump, and filter will both break this vacuum, and make it run well for a few more miles, until the vacuum builds again.

The tank is usually vented to relieve pressure and vacuum through the gas cap.

Basically, sounds like a bad gas cap.

Try driving with the cap loose or removed. If that fixes it, buy a new cap. Preferably a locking one, as the amount of fuel these trucks hold is pretty tempting to less than honest folks. My 1990 C2500 has a 34 gallon tank.

Coil?? with the other symptoms, how'd you come up with that?

I put a new fuel pump, fuel filter, and a fuel pump relay and the fuel pump is still not coming on. I am not getting any fuel. Can you please tell me what it might be.

You can see where the cable goes from under the car. You can apply some pressure to the hood and release it with your fingers. This is such a pain in the ****. the cable usually costs around $30.00 And is not hard to replace.

Check to see if the timing belt is broken. Pop the valve cover off and the upper plastic timing cover. It might be broken at the bottom but you should be able to see if there is a tremendous amount of play. If so, it's probably snapped.

I had a similiar issue (2001 Leganza 112,000 miles) ran great then died. Broken timing belt also bent 2 exhaust valves. Bought the timing belt kit (includes water pump, tensioner and 2 pulleys), top end gasket set, 16 valve lifters (8 of mine had collapsed) and 2 valves on Ebay.I found all the procedure documentation posted on line andI did the job myself for about $325 in parts cost. Runs great now!

Moral of the story....change that damn timing belt at the recommended interval of 60,000 miles!

P.S. Your problem sound like broken teeth on the belt. I would suggest a timing belt replacment and then a compression check of a all cylinders to see if any valves were bent - Good Luck!
