2 problems.1997 Chevy blazer, OBD2 and fuel gauge wont read

Check engine light comes on but when hooked up to a code reader it says it's not connected or to turn the key on. Fuse is alright.    Fuel gauge hasn't worked sense i bought it. When i got it it always read full when driving all the time. I put a new sending unit in and now it reads empty when driving all the time.     any ideas of what I'm looking for for either of these problems, thanks

yup the fuse I mentioned was the cigarette fuse. So thats not where its losing power. on the issue of the instrument panel I'll pop a different one in there to see if it changes anything.

I changed the fuel pump on my 1997 chevy pu. The fuel gauge reads full all of the time. It only has 1/4 of a tank.

Problem number one. The circuit that powers up your data link connector (where you plug the code reader into) is the cigarette lighter fuse. Check that fuse to make sure it is not blown. Second problem: You more than likely need to replace your instrument panel cluster.

It sounds like you have a combo of problems. the PCM & an emissions problem (fuel) Was that PCM new when you installed it? if so, unplug it & plug it back in ( check the connector) Start w/ the comm problem so you can read it & look into the fuel pump. Poss seal on tank? Vacuum leak?

Car wont start

Since this engine is fully electronically controlled the first thing that must be done is to read the fault codes of the engine control computer and check the fuel pressure from the electric pump. You will need an OBD2 system code reader and a fuel pressure test gauge.

The OBDII / OBD2 connector is 18" from the center of the center console.

You will need to purchase an OBDII scanner/reader to read these codes.

The alternative method is get a OBD2 cable and a laptop + software to pull the codes.

An inexpensive OBD2/CAN bus reader around $75-$120 is a good start.

chevy and gmc trucks have an on going problem with this, turn the key on,and get a rubber mallot or a hammer and hit the bottom of the fuel tank a couple of times, this will unstick something in the fuel pump/sending unit.

What should I check when the ''service engine'' light goes on in my 2000 chevy blazer? I have also had trouble with the gas gauge. It moves back and forth between half a tank of gas and then it shows...

Advanced Auto Parts and Autozone will check your OBDII for free (On Board Diagnostic System). They will give you a print out of what the code(s) are and possible solutions.
As for the gas gauge, you might check the sending unit from fuel tank and possibly the float in the tank. This requires dropping the tank, you may not be set up to do this work, so find a qualified shop in your area.

The code scanner that you need is called ODBII code reader with ABS, and it works in the same way as the one that you connect to the car computer module (ECU) to read codes when the check engine light comes on, but the cheap ones that you can buy from $50 do not have the ABS brake scan function.

If the problem is the ABS, then it is often a wiring to abs problem, or a defective ABS control module, a scan reading is necessary to know what the problem is.

Below few examples of Code reader with ABS:

Computer problem?

this is defiantly a CPU issue but, at the least, it could be a fuse box issue as well. check both to be safe.. oh, some stereos that are purchased and installed incorrectly can cause this as well.
