Can be brake pads are thin and the warning scraper is what you hear. Might be a wheel bearing.

Testimonial: "I checked the brakes the other day and the pads still look good. And i figured a wheel bearing would make the noise constantly and get louder the faster i go"

SOURCE: My car shimmies upon braking from high speeds

Sounds like warped rotors and worn pads or a worn front end or both. Most shops will check this for free I believe. If it were something like wheel bearings, or rear end you would likely notice this at lower speeds as well with out the brakes being applied. So the direct answer to your question is "Maybe, maybe not". Gee, that was helpful was'nt it?

SOURCE: Grinding noise braking at slow speed hard right turn

The problem is either a bad CV joint or is it possible that the brakes are worn.

sounds like you have a wheel speed sensor going out.. need to have it scanned to see which one is dropping out and making abs kick in..

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

What is the reason for front grinding when turning

This due to either a worn wheel bearing or a worn front drive arm.

The most common cause of a grinding noise when turning is a worn front wheel bearing. What happens is that the weight of the car is shifted on to that wheel as you make the turn causing the worn bearing to make a grinding noise.

Squeaking and grinding noise when I apply the brakes

Try replacing or resurfacing your rotors and brake hardware. Using brake pads similar to the oem will also help stop any problems.

Grinding noise left rear wheel

It's either the brakes or the wheel bearing. Remove the brake rotor and check for grooves or scoring then rotate the hub assembly. You'll find a problem with one of the two. A growl that changes with vehicle speed is usually a bearing whereas brakes usually change sound as you apply low to moderate brake pressure.12_24_2012_7_08_04_pm.png

My brakes sometimes go out for no reason. I changed the brakes and the rotors are fine . when im backing up i here this loud grinding noise and my brakes start going down to the floor. what could be wrong.

Your description sounds like a condition called overactive ABS. the grinding nee is the abs pump engaging which will also cause the brake pedal to fade. What is happening is the abs system thinks a wheel is locking up at slow speed even though all the wheels are turning. The abs engages to correct the condition even though there is nothing to correct. Some common failures that will cause this are a bad wheel speed sensor, incorrect wheel speed sensor gap, or a bad exciter ring. The easiest way to figure this out is with a higher end multi-function scan tool capable of reading abs data. With all four wheel speeds displayed drive the vehicle to duplicate the symptom. When the symptom occurs you should be able to see what speed sensor is dropping out. You can then focus on that wheel by checking the common failures. If you have any further questions i'll be happy to answer them.

Hello I have a 2003 gmc envoy 4wd had to replace front hub assemblies, brake rotors and brake pads. after the job was complete took it for a test drive and every thing worked fine. my wife drove it back...

sounds like the ABS kicked in while your wife was coming to a stop. This would be known as overactive ABS. It usually occurs under 5 mph while braking. It is usually caused by a speed sensor signal dropping out at slow speeds which makes the ABS module think that the wheel has locked up. It will then engage the ABS to unlock the wheel even though the wheel is turning. The brake pedal will fade and the grind of the ABS motor will be heard.

If this was an isolated incident it will be difficult to determine the source of the problem. It it becomes more frequent and predictable it will become a lot easier to figure out. Most of the time a scan tool capable of reading ABS data will be used. The vehicle will be driven while monitoring ABS wheel speed data. When the problem occurs the wheel speed on one of the wheels will drop out and then that wheel/bearing/sensor can be inspected.

Did you torque the axle nuts after installing the new hub and bearings to the proper spec?

Have you checked to see if the new bearings are still tight? with the wheel off the ground grab it at the 12 and 6 o'clock position. if there is any play than that could cause the problem.

let me know what you find or if you have any more questions.

Noise when making a slow speed tight turn. 1999 mercury cougar already replaced right front wheel bearing

noises during slow tight turns are usually CV joints going bad. A way to check, is to jack up one front wheel, set the parking brake, and put the car in drive without pressing the gas. Turn the wheel to both extremes, and listen for the noise. Repeat with the other front wheel (set the first one back down) and listen. Whichever makes the noise, is the side you need to change.

Grinding havig to do with traction control on my

It sounds like the Dealer is trying to pass the buck or has terrible mechanics. As I read that you have a 2008 Model, there should be some warranties left either by Years in service or Mileage. First call the main Ford Customer service line for assistance.

You are partially correct about the Traction Control and bad weather. Here is how it works and I will later tell you about which components to check. The Traction C is suppose to stop the drive wheels from spinning at different Right and Left wheel speeds Period. Be it snow, rain or deliberately Lead footing the gas pedal it is suppose stop spinning wheels.

It is important for the mechanic to know how the vehicle measures these speeds. And knowing this the mechanic knows which components to check. Each wheel has a sensor and loose brake dust or rust can prevent the sensors from counting the turns of each wheel. Depending on equipment there can be additional speed sensors in the axles.

When the spins do not match, the Traction C kicks in, lights up the dash indicator and tries to balance the speed of the Right and Left wheel. The engine will cutout and the rear brakes will apply automatically to the fastest spinning wheel first, and then modulate until things are turning at the same speed.

This action will wear out the brake pads. It can warp the rotors and you will hear noise when you use the brakes and the pedal will pulsate if the rotors are warped. You should also check the rear Emergency brakes as a source of noise and for the rust that is blinding the wheel sensors.

That all this damage is there and the Dealer can not see it is something the main Customer service people should know about. Would be interested in the outcome of this.
