Rattling noise during start up. I turn the key and there is a loud rattle noise when the car first fires up. When the car fires up it sounds like I have my foot on the accelerator as it revs up at first but goes to normal right away. Also I notice my car is taking a bit longer to turn over on some of my start ups. This seems to be more when I re-start my car after driving around a bit and the car is hot, but not always, it has done this in the morning on occasion. My car isn't over-heating though, it is just summer time now and the days are a lot hotter. I don't know if these rattling noises and delayed start ups are connected but they seem to go hand in hand. The rattling sounds as if something is loose but I can't be sure.

I'll take a look tonight when I get home, thanks for the reply. I'll let you know what I find. I did read something about a heat shield coming loose as well but I am not familiar with where that is on the car. Think that could be an issue as well?

Only seems to be in cooler weather after the engine has got to normal running temperature.

Check your starter and see if it is loose, this will cause it (starter) to use more amperage to start which leaves less amperage for the rest of the electrical system (maybe the long start problem too), hope this helps, let me know

Why would my Pontiac start with a loud rattling noise?

Brown Milky Oil sounds like your head gasket has gone and coolant water is mixing with engine oil. Unless you have an oil cooler, it may be from there.

You can locate the rattling if you get someone to start it with the hood up.

I got a 1995 Pontiac Grand Am 2.4 liter twin cam engine with a loud rattling noise when started then bogs down then press the gas and it dies

Not a good idea to press the gas while there is a loud rattling noise from the engine. The resulting cost can be very painful.

I strongly suggest the source of the noise is located and rectified as a priority before worrying about anything else. You might be lucky and find that action will cure both problems.

I have an 03 Ford Explorer 4.0 v6. We JUST replaced the timing chains. A week later, I had a belt shred and got that changed as well. Since then, it has started having a little rattling noise, which has...

I would double check the belt tensioner, it may have been damaged during the timing chain replacement. Also if those chains use a tensioner, this could be the culprit as well

Engine Rattling

Try checking the heat shield on your exhaust system. You should have one over the manifold and one over your cat converter under the car.
